Founded in 1882, Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, Massachusetts, was the oldest campus in the Seventh-day Adventist worldwide educational system. In 1882, the school was organized as a preparatory school under the leadership of Adventist 'pioneer' Stephen Nelson Haskell to serve the needs of Adventist constituents in the northeastern part of the United States and Bermuda. It served the Northern New England Conference, New York Conference, Southern New England Conference, Bermuda Conference, Greater New York Conference, and Northeastern Conference.
Atlantic Union College had its beginnings asSouth Lancaster Academy, a secondary school begun in 1882. Very early in its existence, the school felt the need for work to be offered beyond the secondary level. It became Lancaster Junior College in 1918 and Atlantic Union College in 1922. Its first degrees were B.Th. Moreover, B.R.E. degrees, but in 1933 the college was authorized to grant the B.A. degree and in 1954, the B.S. degree. In 1990 authorization was received to grant the M.Ed. Degree.
Exhilarating energy surging through the lives and work of many has propelled A.U.C. into full operation as an institution of higher education in the Seventh-day Adventist denomination. Classes resumed fall 2015, in both degree program and certificate program courses of study. Enrollment has continued to grow.
Atlantic Union College is still considered a small, rural college. The campus is infused with a culture of graciousness, dignity, respect, and Christian love. It maintains its standing as the only college in the Atlantic Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists servicing the Northern New England Conference, New York Conference, Southern New England Conference, Bermuda Conference, Greater New York Conference, and Northeastern Conference.
