The University has an enviable reputation for providing quality, student-focused education in a professional and friendly environment. Our superb courses, state-of-the-art facilities, excellent staff, and focus on practical skills and professional relevance produce some of the country's most employable graduates.
We put £270 million into the regional economy and support thousands of jobs in the area. We're investing £260 million in our estate, including a significant expansion of our city center campus at Eastside, providing students with an enviable range of facilities. The Complete University Guide ranked us as a top 30 UK university for spending on facilities in 2015.
Our staff and student community are defined by our core values, which outline who we are as a University and how we will work with each other. Our core values are Excellence, People focused, Partnership working, and Fairness, and integrity. With around 24,000 students from 80 countries, Birmingham City University is a large, diverse, and increasingly popular place. We put students at the heart of everything we do, giving them the best opportunities for future success.
Our values characterize Birmingham City University staff and student community. They define the qualities most important to us and guide all that we do to enrich our teaching and learning environment. They are underpinned by our Core Values Framework, which sets out the principles of behavior. We encourage all members of the University community to not only know and appreciate but also live by daily.
"To transform the prospects of individuals, employers, and society through excellence in practice-based education, research, and knowledge exchange." "To be the leading university for creative and professional practice inspired by innovation and inquiry." We take pride in ensuring the highest quality standards of academic achievement and professional service delivery. We value everyone, recognizing that what we do is for all those connected with the University. We work with students and the wider University community to create healthy and successful relationships. We take a fair and balanced approach to our activities and are mindful of our actions' impact.
Our early history can be traced back to the five individual colleges which would be brought together as The City of Birmingham Polytechnic in 1971. Birmingham College of Art has its roots back in October 1843, when the Birmingham Society of Artists opened the Birmingham Government School of Design. In 1884 the School evolved into Birmingham College of Art, moving to a beautiful purpose-built Venetian Gothic building on Margaret Street designed by John Chamberlain. Today Margaret Street, which still houses our Department of Art, is a Grade I Listed Building.

Our courses are highly practical, and career-focused and professional bodies accredit many. This means that you will gain qualifications with us prized by employers, giving you an essential advantage in the job market. With around 24,000 students, Birmingham City University is one of the UK's major universities. In Birmingham, the UK's second city and natural capital of the West Midlands, we have a long history of close interaction with this vibrant region. Our dedicated pages allow you to search our current job vacancies or see a full list of our jobs.
We have a distinctive focus on education and research for professional and creative practice. We have extensive collaboration with business, industry, and public services. We're one of the three long-standing universities in the city of Birmingham and the West Midlands. The University is in an exciting phase of its development. Our mission is to establish a strong position as an exemplar for engagement with employers and the community and become a university of choice for its many client groups – at a time when the market is expected to become increasingly competitive. We have re-launched (from our former UCE Birmingham) a new corporate identity and are now developing and implementing a more extended term brand strategy.
The University is a highly active institution with ambitions to be fully recognized for its activities and achievements, both now and in the future. We are ultimately seeking to change our position and reputation, underpinned by the transformation of our core business. Engaging more effectively with key stakeholders, partners, and people of influence will be essential in building up a reputation and increasing word-of-mouth referral.
