The University of Tunis El Manar is a public administrative institution created in 1987 under the name of the University of sciences, technologies, and medicine of Tunis by Article 97 of Act No.87-83 of 31 December 1987. It took its present name by decree N° 200-2826 of 27 November 2000 regarding universities' renaming. Since its creation, it has never ceased to embrace new domains to respond to education and research needs while maintaining its humanist values. UTM provides basic, thorough, and ongoing training curricula organized in part according to the LMD system (French acronym for Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, and Ph.D.).
The University of Tunis El Manar brings together the oldest Tunisian universities, including the most diverse areas of training and research ranging from basic and engineering to medical and paramedical sciences, juridical and political sciences, economics, and human sciences. Like most Tunisian universities, UTM faces some national challenges generally related to the higher education system, in particular the implementation of the LMD system, the degrading conditions of student life, the high unemployment rate of University graduates, etc.
