USW's spirit of the foundation is derived from the founding ideology of Dangun (the founding father of Korea) called 'Hongik' (devotion to the welfare of humanity).
Under such a spirit, it aims at fostering talents of integrity and self-discipline who will positively contribute to the development of the state and the realization of a just society.
To cope with new environments and enhance the efficiency of education and research, USW will reorganize the administrative structure, computerize school affairs, support research activities, strengthen the evaluation of professors' achievements, and consolidate relationships with other domestic universities and abroad.
USW provides students with welfare facilities and a natural landscape on the campus for the re-creation of students.
In order to help to develop community industry and culture, it runs various institutions and centers such as the Institute of Up-to-date Science and Technology, Center for the Inauguration of Enterprise, Center for the Support of Techno-park, Center for the Research on Clean Environment, Consortium Center for linking industry and Academia, Institute of Social Education, Graduate Schools for Employees, and Institute for Teacher-Training. USW also gives educational support to elementary and middle schools and helps develop the community's cultural activities.
USW will construct a high-tech general hospital, Oriental medicine hospital, faculty lounge, and design complex on the natural scenery campus. It will also secure off-campus space.
To meet the needs of students and the community, USW will maximize educational productivity through an overall readjustment of the educational system, strengthen the liberal arts course, develop programs for early graduation, and for merging undergraduate and graduate courses. It will also readjust matriculation systems extensively to select superior students.
To enhance information-oriented education and research, which is regarded as an essential requirement in the 21st century, USW founded the College of Information Engineering in 2002 and the Department of Information and Media in 2002. It also established a consortium of related fields such as computer, information, arts, industrial engineering, newspaper and broadcasting, electronics, and electrical engineering. The College of Information Engineering was awarded the best IT college by the Ministry of Information and Communication in 2002.
