Saga University

Saga University recreated itself as a national university rooted and based in the Saga region by restructuring the academic units for education and research into a total of six faculties and five graduate schools by creating the new Faculty of Art and Regional Design in April 2016 and adding the Arita Campus in Arita, Saga in April 2017, which has been and is still famous for the industry of ceramic ware. Thus, we now have the Faculties of Education, Art and Regional Design, Economics, Medicine, Science and Engineering, and Agriculture the Graduate Schools of School Education, Regional Design, Medicine, Engineering, and Agriculture.
By making use of these academic bodies and other attached facilities, including the Museum of Art, whose visitors have reached over 100,000, and also the Library, the Elementary and Junior high schools, the Hospital, and advanced research centers such as the Institute of Ocean Energy, we aim to be the center of intelligence that can solve a wide range of problems in local areas as necessary for the development of the region. In particular, we are producing people adjustable to social changes by promoting ICT education at Creative Learning Center, which is recognized as a joint-use educational facility, and Microsoft Innovation Center, set up in Microsoft Incorporated and related companies, preparing for the coming of the fourth Industrial Revolution.
From the history of Saga, we can learn many lessons from our predecessors' work, who played active roles toward the end of the Edo period and at the beginning of the Meiji Restoration. Under the strong leadership of wise ruler Naomasa Nabeshima, the Saga clan built the academic basics that supported Japan's future development. They promoted Dutch studies and adopted Western civilization earlier than any other clan. In particular, the advanced technology the Saga clan had then acquired contributed to Japan's development during the Meiji Restoration. So, it is no exaggeration to say that the industrial revolution in the Meiji period started in Saga.
The former Mitsu Naval Dock in Saga, which constituted 'the heritage of Japan's industrial revolution in the Meiji era, including the iron, shipbuilding, and coal industries,' was registered as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2015. The Saga Clan made Japan's first reverberatory furnace. Sano Tanetomi and other refiners created a steam engine and sent steamships and steam locomotives into the world. The Saga Clan also started producing Japan's tèlecommuncátion devices, which resulted in the Clan obtaining enormous information on the Chinese Opium War.
Saga University expects every student to challenge him- and herself in the modern world far beyond the local university's local context with innovative spirits and with great pride in the history of the old Saga Clan. The faculties and the staff will work together in further developing the university with this new slogan: "To become an intellectual/regional center with global-minded individuals rich in artistic sensitivity and diversity."
