Future University Hakodate is located on a hill overlooking Hakodate's city with a spectacular view of Mt. Hakodate and the Tsugaru straight. Hakodate has a long history dating back to the Jomon Period 5,000 years ago. Its trade experience, war, and the opening of an international port in the Edo to Meiji Period transition, and its subsequent role as the gateway to Hokkaido's development have formed its unique history and culture. Future University Hakodate, located in this beautiful and fertile land, wishes to inherit the pioneer spirit to explore unknown fields. As a "Regional Center for Knowledge Creation" of Hakodate and South Hokkaido areas, Future University Hakodate aims to create a sustainable society for people to lead better lives.
Future University Hakodate was founded in 2000 to provide a unique futuristic education and research environment that could contribute to a 21st-century world with flourishing scientific technology, art, and culture.
The spirit of "Open Space, Open mind" is the philosophy behind this enterprising spirit. The vast "Open space" of the main building allows students and teachers to connect and interact openly and be actively involved in realizing their goals with "Open minds."
Information Science is now relevant to every aspect of human life. Future University Hakodate pursues our original education and research-based upon the foundation of Information Science and the philosophy of "Designing Society."
Our Faculties are high-level and experienced, with a wide range of academic and industrial careers. They actively pursue collaboration beyond their respective specialized fields. The open and transparent building architecture of our campus and our culture of close relationships between faculty and students characterize our intellectual environment, which naturally supports open-minded thinking, autonomous problem solving, spontaneous learning, and collaboration.
Systems Information Science is a field of research in which we strive for solutions to systems related problems in the real world by integrating findings in ICT, Design, Complex Systems, and Artificial Intelligence. Hakodate area is the field of practice for our research and education. We are proud of our achievements in community-rooted practical studies we have conducted since the university opened. Several results have already been incorporated into medicine, tourism, transportation, and marine science.
In a modern networked society, each regional community is directly linked to the world. Despite the connectedness, we firmly believe that starting with a thorough investigation of the local with its "uniqueness" is the necessary and essential first step to any severe works for social problems. Future University Hakodate aspires to carve out the future as a Center for Knowledge Creation through its contributions to local and international societies.
The Future University at Hakodate intends to redefine "community" to include our students, our faculty and administrative staff, people in Hakodate and neighboring towns, people in the region of Hokkaido, and expanding throughout Japan and the world, offering a learning opportunity to everyone within physical or digital reach. We want to redefine humans as lifelong learners through our sharing of meaningful learning and living experiences.
