Not long after the Republic of Indonesia (1945), some national figures who were also Indonesian Christian leaders were moved and felt the need to establish a Church Council in Indonesia (DGI). The hope was only implemented on May 25, 1950. At the beginning of its activities, this institution has also given considerable attention to education because, at that time, the Indonesian people desperately need human resources to fill the field of employment in various aspects of life. This need is urgent.
Thought would want the Indonesian Christian community to participate in the world of education continues to grow in the discussions that took place in this institution. Even thought about the need to establish a "Universiteit." On that basis, DGI formed a commission led by prof. Dr. IP Simanjuntak, MA. The commission is in charge of establishing a feasibility study to establish a university whose results are reported to DGI. As a follow-up, the DGI passed a resolution on the Christian Universiteit on June 30, 1953. The resolution signed by Ds. J Rumambi, as the General Secretary of DGI, in the DGI Complete Meeting from June 20-30, 1953, proposed to all churches and Christian communities in Indonesia to fully assist the establishment of Christian Universiteit, both morally and materially.
Moving from the resolution, then the Christian figures of Indonesia, namely Mr. Todung Sutan Gunung Mulia, Mr. Yap Thiam Hien, Benjamin Thomas Philip Sugar, on behalf of DGI churches (now PGI), founded the Indonesian Christian University Foundation in the presence of a notary Raden Kadima, with the number 117 certificate, dated July 18, 1953. Elviannus Katoppo later enlarged members of the Foundation, Ong Jan Hong MD, Aminudin Pohan MD, Condar Nainggolan MD Series, Benjamin Prawirohadmodjo, Pdt. Komarlin Tjakraatmadja, Gerrit Siwabessy MD, Tan Tek Heng, and JCT Simorangkir. Three months later, on October 15, 1953, it was inaugurated Christian University of Indonesia (UKI) consisting of:
Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, with Sub-faculty: Pedagogy and Literature, and Faculty of Economics. At that time, lectures and administrative activities are still underway at the HSK building located on Jl. Diponegoro 86, and in three flats on Jl. Salemba 10. In the course of his devotion, the Faculty of Law was established (1956), Faculty of Medicine (1962), Faculty of Engineering (1963), and Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (1994).
Until now, UKI has seven faculty consisting of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Literature (FS), Economics (FE), Law (FH), Medicine (FK), Engineering (FT), Social Sciences and Political Science (FISIPOL). In addition to the seven faculties, UKI also has three academies consisting of the Academy of Physiotherapy, the Academy of Nursing, the Banking Academy, and the Graduate Program.
