Batanghari University, since its inception in 1985 until now, fostered by and shelter under Jambi Education Foundation. This Foundation is a development of Jambi Education Foundation, formerly built STKIP Jambi in 1970 - 1977. The purpose and objectives of the Jambi Education Foundation are to assist the government in improving the community's education by conducting educational efforts in a broad sense. To achieve the aims and objectives, the Foundation conducts educational activities and equips the facilities and infrastructure needed gradually.
Founding Board of Foundation Jambi Education initially has seven members, but 3 of them are no longer in this area because their primary duty has moved out of Jambi. Therefore, it is the idea of all members of the Founding Body to formulate a provision for members whose position is included as a founding member of the Foundation based on Article 10 of the Articles of Establishment. However, subsequently found to be unable to remain domiciled in the area where the Foundation is located, it is categorized into an ex officio foundation member. About that matter, based on the decision of the meeting of the Founding Board members of the Jambi Education Foundation as implied in the Deed No. 1 dated April 6, 1985, the membership of the Founding Board was added so that the new members became 15 persons.
Recognizing that the increased capacity of state universities can not offset the increasing demand for higher education, the Jambi Education Foundation feels challenged to transform STKIP Jambi into an embryo in realizing a private university in this area. The effort to realize Yayasan Pendidikan Jambi initiated the idea by forming a working team tasked with preparing the feasibility study and preparing the requirements required to submit an operational permit to the Minister of Education and Culture Kopertis Region II in Palembang. The established work team successfully performs the task of preparing the material's completeness and the requirements of the permit application based on the provisions contained in the Letter of Intent dated June 6, 1985. The proposed private college is named Batanghari University, abbreviated with the acronym UNBARI.
Finally, after preparing the registration of prospective students, preparing a schedule of lectures, and recruiting teachers, the inauguration of the establishment of Batanghari University on November 1, 1985, based on the Decision Letter of Jambi Education Foundation and Drs. Kemal Mohamad Saleh was the first rector.
