The history of higher education in Pécs dates back to 1367 when Louis the Great initiated a university in the episcopal city of Pécs. As a result of an integration process of several stages, the University of Pécs was founded, one of the most famous, prestigious institutions having a leading role in regional education. It has ten faculties that cover the full spectrum of high-quality higher education.
The University of Pécs, with its nearly 20,000 student population, 1,600 academics, and ten faculties, is one of the largest universities in Hungary, the knowledge center of South Transdanubia, and the oldest University of the country. The roots of the institution date back as early as 1367.
The University of Pécs, established by King Louis the Great in 1367, celebrates the 650th anniversary of its foundation in 2017. Our University represents and embraces a great tradition dating back to medieval times and is actively linked to institutionalizing new knowledge directed both to the present and the future at the same time. The University of Pécs, in recognition of the significance of the establishment of the University and absorbing the nurturing of its spiritual heritage, and the city of Pécs, is planning a series of anniversary events which are also significant for Southern Transdanubia and Hungary, in order to commemorate not only its existence but the continuous development of Hungarian higher education and science flourishing over the centuries.
Pécs is a beautiful place to study. It is simultaneously a friendly village and a very vibrant city, in which you never have to be bored. You can be sure you will find everything that a student could wish for.
The splendid university life is guaranteed by a wide range of services – some of which are only available in the country at the University of Pécs.
As a citizen of the UP, you have the opportunity to be part of many cultural experiences. In connection to sports and mobility, more offices are open for those students interested.
As a student of the University of Pécs, you need to be aware of some rules and orders which will shape your life as a member of our academic community. Read further and get to know the institutional hierarchy and the academic calendar of the UP. Learn about grades and exams, as well as vital registration rules!
Faculties ( - or in some instances, institutes) are the smallest units in the UP's university structure organized within a particular branch of science, having their administration. The UP has ten faculties (9 with a seat in Pécs and 1 with a seat in Szekszárd). Departments within each faculty have the right to decide on the timetable of lectures and seminars and the range of courses offered.
At the Hungarian universities, education is provided in a system of seminars and lectures. Lectures are held for wider audiences where attendance is recommended but usually not obligatory. At the end of the semester, students have to pass written or oral examinations. Seminars are usually more informal study groups for 10-20 students, where there is room for an individual consultation, discussion of the material, and solving exercises. They usually conclude with an independently written paper or an examination.
Exchange and International students are provided with a student ID card with which they can have the same advantages as Hungarian students, e.g., such as reduced fares for all public transport, reduced-price entrance tickets for museums, and Youth Hostel accommodation, and library membership, sports facilities for free of charge.
The academic year is divided into two semesters. Students have special exam periods at the end of each, during which they take oral or written exams. The UP's faculties may have different schedules about starting and finishing semesters and breaks throughout the academic year. As one of our international students, our academic calendar may be useful for you when planning your exams and travels home.
Accommodation in a university dormitory is offered to exchange students coming on a scholarship or through bilateral agreements between the sending University and the UP. Dormitories are located in the residential area of Pécs. The University's faculties and the city center are relatively accessible, only a short bus journey away.
Altogether there are several rooms of reasonably high quality available for Erasmus incomers during the academic year. However, we cannot offer a room for a single student due to the short supply of generally great demand for rooms. Besides, although it is a general preference of students to have a room of their own, we believe in the importance of the other multi-cultural experience that results from incomers of different nationalities sharing a room in an equally unfamiliar environment.
The accommodation is made up of units that contain two rooms, a shared bathroom, and in some dormitories, a kitchen as well ( in some cases, two standard kitchens can be found on every floor). Depending on the dormitory, 4-6 students live together and share the common areas in one unit. Bedclothes are supplied and changed regularly. There is a laundry room where tenants can wash their clothing free of charge.
The Student Hostel Committee organizes life in the dormitories and the various events (game shows, contests, professional programs, exhibitions). The student hostels' infrastructure has continuously been improving in recent years, but rooms are still offered at a reasonable price. Nearly all hostels offer library and computer services and have their clubs, standard rooms, sporting facilities, snack bars, video, and TV rooms.
This year nearly 500 international students live in dormitories due to the various scholarship programs, and that all faculties launched English-language training. So far, exchange students were mostly placed in the Boszorkány and the Hunyor dormitories. This year, they are placed on the first floor of the Boszorkány Hostel, the Hunyor Hostel, the László Szalay (UNIV Hostel), and the Szántó Hostel. Due to the increasing number, each student hostel has a student representative responsible for the international students.
