The University of Münster is one of the largest universities in Germany with a rich and time-honored tradition. Some 44,000 students and 5,600 academics from Germany and around the world appreciate the University's extensive range of courses, diverse research profile, and the advantages of living in the city of Münster. Our slogan says it all: "living. knowledge"
The University of Münster is committed to offering excellent research opportunities, high-quality teaching, and strong support to its junior researchers. Ensuring equal opportunity for both men and women is also a matter of vital interest. With close regional ties and a cosmopolitan attitude, the University of Münster promotes international exchange, interdisciplinary cooperation, and knowledge transfer.
WWU Münster has developed a strong research profile in natural sciences, the humanities, medicine, law, and business administration. It targets top-level research in high-performance areas and combines this with promoting first-class young researchers. At the same time, ensuring that broad research can be carried out creates a secure basis for excellence.
WWU Münster's research aims are closely linked with its commitment to providing high-quality courses of study covering a wide range of subjects. It has taken a pioneering lead in changing teacher training to the double bachelor's degree. The second step – a bottom-up process – will involve the master's courses. The development of programs for structured doctoral courses represents the third step in realizing the objectives set out in the Bologna process. WWU thus provides the best possible teaching based on high-quality broad and top-level research.
The WWU Münster organizes outstanding academic junior researchers' promotion in graduate schools that provide structured doctoral courses. Moreover, the University creates an environment conducive to top-level research carried out by postdocs. It also supports the setting up of groups of young researchers and the creation of junior professorships to strengthen the links between postgraduate education and research.
WWU Münster considers gender equality to be a task of strategic importance. The aim is to make it easier for women to combine an academic career and family interests. In combination with the high quality of life offered by the Münster region, the University hopes to reap benefits in recruiting brilliant researchers in the future. WWU's second strategic objective in gender mainstreaming is to apply suitable measures to strengthen women's social qualifications in pursuing academic careers. To initiate such measures to reach these goals, WWU subjects its gender mainstreaming policies to an external "family-friendly university audit."
The University of Münster is proud to have ten winners of the renowned Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize teaching and researching at the university, four of whom work at the Mathematical Institute.
The University itself honors outstanding achievements in research, teaching, and studies with remunerated Rectorate prizes. These include the Research Prize, Transfer Prize, Teaching Prize, Equal Opportunity Prize, Student Prize for Extraordinary Student Commitment, and the Faculty Dissertation Prizes.
In addition to the Sybille Hahne awards for start-ups and excellence in the sciences and humanities, outstanding theses and dissertations are distinguished by the Maria Kassel Stiftung (in cooperation with the Department of Women in Theological Research).
In past years, the University of Münster has awarded prestigious prizes in recognition of outstanding achievement in research, teaching, academics, and the area of equal opportunity. The prizes are conferred at the annual New Year's reception at the University of Münster. Not only do they acknowledge and reward remarkable achievements, but also – and perhaps more importantly – serve as an incentive and support for future projects.
The University of Münster cooperates very closely with scientific institutes and corporate partners in several areas. These collaborations are conducted at both a regional and international level.
The University of Münster supports a wide variety of projects and cooperative ventures. In this way, it plays a vital role in promoting academic and scientific networking in the Münsterland region.
The University of Münster relies on a broad base of partners and sponsors committed to supporting profile-building and creative projects in research, teaching, and academia. In addition to the Stiftung WWU and the University Society Münster, these include other foundations, funding associations, companies, alumni, and other donors. The central contact partner for sponsors is the University Fundraising Department.
The University also maintains close ties to its former students and staff. As the most extensive network at the University of Münster, the Alumni Club enables alumni to stay in touch with their alma mater and one other. Faculty and institute-based alumni associations contribute to strengthening the network in their respective disciplines.
The University of Münster and its central facilities offer students a broad range of academic and study-related services.
In addition to traditional teaching and learning methods, the University offers students and teachers an extensive range of digital services, from online instruction materials to electronic tests.
The University offers students a diverse array of outstanding academic programs and events. These range from subject-specific lectures, General Studies courses, foreign language instruction at the Language Centre, and software training seminars at the ZIV – Centre for Information Processing.
Students at the University of Münster are permitted to manage the details of their study place themselves to a large extent. This requires a certain degree of responsibility but also offers greater flexibility.
