With eight hundred years of excellence to build on, the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, a descendant of the Sorbonne and the Faculty of Law and Economics of Paris, is one of the largest universities in France today. Some forty thousand students are enrolled in 14 teaching and research departments (Unités de Formation et de Recherche) and 5 Institutes, which offer top level degree courses in law, political science, economics, management, and the humanities.

The equality of women and men is a fundamental right enshrined in the constitution is an essential value for democracy. This right should be legally recognized: it must be practical and affect all aspects of professional, social, political, and cultural. It represents a significant challenge for the future development of our university. The Conference of University Presidents adopted the Charter for equality between women and men in higher education in January 2013. It aims to support the implementation of an effective equality policy in universities. If the public higher education and research guarantee women and men equal rights and equal access to all jobs, grades, functions, and training, the reality of the situation is much more diverse and complex: inequalities in the paths of women and men persist, both among staff and between students and students.
