The Technical University of Varna (TUV) was founded in 1962 by a Decree of the Council of Ministers of the People's Republic of Bulgaria and Act of the National Assembly. Its establishment was to ensure conditions for the education of engineering staff for shipbuilding, transport, machine-building, electric power engineering, and communications. Initially, the university was named Higher Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering-Varna and incorporated three faculties: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Shipbuilding. The first admission of students was for the 1963/64 academic year.
The Technical University of Varna is a state educational institution that accepts the challenge and the responsibility to serve the public needs for preparing qualified engineers and supporting the technical development in a world that undergoes global, technological, and cultural changes. TU-Varna's mission is to be a factor in the development of Bulgaria's intellectual potential, to support the process of sustainable development and to contribute to the achievement of new standards in the communication of people.
As part of our role and based on our close cooperation with the industry, the active research sector, the European universities and standing on our achievements and traditions, we have to organize the creation of market-oriented highly qualified specialists in all educational degrees for Bulgarian and the world economy, more specifically in the fields of:

- Ecology and Technologies for Environmental Protection
The Technical University of Varna is the only Bulgarian public university following the specific mission to integrate into a single process the education of engineers and the conduct of scientific research in shipbuilding and marine technologies, navigation and water transport, ecology, and engineering technologies for sea environment.
The Technical University of Varna (TUV) is a University open to the world. As such, it offers all its students and staff the opportunity to undertake a mobility period.
TUV has been an active participant in the Erasmus program since 1999 in all its stages – Socrates/Erasmus, LLP/Erasmus, and Erasmus+ program.
In 2013 the Technical University of Varna had successfully been awarded a new Erasmus Charter 2014-2020 to take part in the ERASMUS+ program. This offers students funding towards a study exchange between 3 and 12 months at our partner universities across Europe, or for a traineeship work placement lasting between 2 and 12 months.
Students participating in the Erasmus program not only gain invaluable academic and work experience but also have the opportunity to experience life in another country, develop language and intercultural skills, travel, and broaden their horizons.
The Technical University of Varna is an autonomous institution incorporating 4 Faculties, 2 Colleges, Foreign Students Dean's Office, and Department of Foreign Languages. The faculties are subdivided into 31 Departments.
