The university and university colleges' campuses are spread across the city, which enlivens the atmosphere. It is impossible to imagine Ghent without its students cycling. With its university and four university colleges, Ghent can offer a wide range of study opportunities. Ghent has it all: living, nightlife, first-class education, and many leisure activities. The language spoken in Ghent is Dutch, the language of twenty million Dutch and Flemish people.
Ghent boasts a unique mixture of architecture and contemporary events, international repute museums, outstanding gastronomic choice, and spectacular good nightlife. It has an agreeable, charming inner city where cozy corners alternate with pleasant and busy shopping streets. Ghent combines medieval grandeur and modern consciousness in a natural and, above all, modest way.
Moreover, the city is a cultural attraction with its important music and film festivals and its varied theatre and performance scene. There are five small, independent venues for every traditional theatre, and for each commercial cinema complex, there are two art-house cinemas. The music scene is alive and original, with many international bands playing in Ghent and at the Belgian festivals all year round.
Ghent has some exciting plans for the future: it wants to be climate neutral by 2050, and it is one of the SDG voices to promote the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. However, Ghent knows this cannot be realized without YOU! Everyone should be involved: you, me, every institution and company ... Ghent aims to become the commons city of the future! Read the brochure about sustainability here.

The university college has acquired the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education for the full duration of the new Erasmus+ Programme (2014-2020). The Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) provides the general quality framework for European and international cooperation activities a higher education institution may carry out within the Programme.
The award of an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education is a pre-requisite for all higher education institutions located in an eligible country and willing to participate in individuals' learning mobility and cooperation for innovation and acceptable practices under the Programme. The Charter is awarded for the full duration of the Programme.
Researchers, students, and external partners collaborate yearly on PSR-projects to translate societal problems into practical solutions.
Next to internal funding, researchers also work with national and international funding schemes, including Horizon 2020 (and the former framework packages 6 and 7), Interreg, the European Social Fund, and others.
Valorization – the implementation of research results in society – is an essential strategy for practice-based research. Therefore, the results and expertise achieved during PSR-projects are deployed as much as possible in the societal field by organizing activities such as education, training, consultancy, coaching, counseling, and follow-on research. All these are realized both pro-active or at the request of partners – always tailored to our partners' needs.
Artevelde University College endeavors to encourage the general public for science and technique, with the Flemish Government's support (Department Economic, Science, and Innovation) and often in collaboration with other institutions of the Association University Ghent. In order to do so, we appeal to researchers, lecturers, and students.
Artevelde University College concentrates most of its research activities in Research and Development Centres (RDCs). Each RDC group at least three educational training types around one specific societal focus and, at this moment, combines one or more thematic pillars. RDC's research focuses on field questions on which both researchers, lecturers, external partners, and students collaborate to examine innovative, practical solutions and applications.
Idea Factory wants to challenge students, staff, alumni, national and international partners to find answers based on new ideas within a rapidly-changing educational context. To take the lead in this process, the Arteveldehogeschool Centre for Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (Idea Factory) was set up in 2011 as a knowledge center contributing to the college's strategic objective: "to sow and stimulate creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship among students and employees."
Each of the center's 16 school departments has its Idea Factory project officer. Curricula have been updated to introduce relevant skills for entrepreneurship. Idea Factory creativity officers facilitate brainstorming sessions, support teacher training in creative thinking, and offer inspirational lectures to enhance creative and entrepreneurial actions. Significantly, support is also provided to students and young graduates wishing to establish their own startup companies.
The Idea Factory initiative provides an exciting example of how creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship can be mainstreamed across a wide range of learning areas, thus contributing to creative skills among graduates and future professionals in different sectors. Creating such structured links to creativity in the college system can prove invaluable in breeding a new generation of entrepreneurs.
