The University of Applied Arts Vienna aims at focusing its art and research profile now and in the future. Therefore, the division Support Art and Research in cooperation with national and international partners are developing projects that will supply (artistic) researchers with useful tools for applications, project management, and documentation, as well as open access-strategies.
The "Art- and Research Database – Angewandte/ basis wien" emerges from the ongoing cooperation between the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Angewandte) and basis wien – archive and documentation center for modern and contemporary art in and from Austria.
The collaboration, which started in 2014, ensures the continuity of basis wien's documentation of Austrian artists and their activities. Furthermore, the cooperation allows further development of the current database to secure the (artistic) research located at the Angewandte.
Architecture is the contemporary, three-dimensional expression of all the facets of our culture. Therefore, it is not a product, but the result of the design procedure, which can be equated with the thought process. The realization of design that innovatively goes beyond the limits of the status quo requires strategies. Therefore, the Institute for Architecture development at the Vienna University of Applied seeks to promote strategic training.
The Institute of Conservation and Restoration has a reputation as a respected competence center for questions of conservation and restoration about artistic and cultural treasures. The four areas of specialist study at the "Angewandte," with focal points co-ordinated with teaching at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts (Institute of Conservation-Restoration), are divided into the conservation and restoration of paintings, artifacts, textiles, and stone. Also, possibilities exist for specialization in the areas of archaeology and find conservation, as well as modern and contemporary art, taking into account the current problem of new media.
The Life Drawing Department has the objective of a compositional analysis of drawing and an introduction to the content and problems of object study.
The Institute of Fine Arts and Media Arts comprises twelve departments, each with a different artistic focus. All its departments are oriented to relative movements in the fine arts and digital and trans-media art forms. Teaching and art practice within the Institute opens up and dynamize the artistic disciplines of today, furnish an artistic-theoretical approach to various visualization cultures in art and science, and examine relevant theoretical and historical principles.
The database contains entries about approximately 82.000 persons, 15.500 institutions, 60.000 events (projects, exhibitions, and other events) and 82.000 objects (effective May 2017). Angewandte, therefore, takes the opportunity to display its activities in art and research on one of the most prestigious platforms for contemporary Austrian art.
The Institute of Creative Writing Vienna has been designed to follow the example set by Leipzig, Hildesheim, and Biel. Like these models, it is dedicated to the teaching of literary writing on a university basis. Courses are intended for students wishing to learn a diversity of literary techniques and cross-border methods for three years at the end of which a final work will be submitted for a bachelor's degree.
The Institute offers a multifaceted teaching staff, representing the variety found in the German language literary scene, and furnishes intensive student support. Besides, leading authors present their writings in the form of workshop discussions and readings. Simultaneously, in teamwork with the School for Poetry, short-term interventions are possible for extended forms of linguistic expression.
The Zentrum Fokus Forschung is a unit – complementarily to existing departments – at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in which independent artistic research is generated and connected artistic work thereby is regarded as the basis of knowledge production, of course in a productive relation towards existing ways of knowledge development, as they have been established in other fields of research.
