- The University of Toyama is located in Toyama City and Takaoka City in Toyama Prefecture, located on the West Coast, in Japan. Toyama Prefecture is a local district with changes of the seasons where the Tateyama mountain range is in the south and Toyama Bay, on the Sea of Japan, to the north. The University of Toyama is a university comprised of 3 former national universities Toyama University, Toyama Medical, Pharmaceutical University, and Takaoka National College were integrated in October 2005. This integrated University houses eight faculties, six graduate schools, the University Laboratory, Hospital, and Library, and 12 institutes such as the Center for International Education and Research. There are approximately 9,300 students (including 320 international students) studying at the University. The University of Toyama has agreements of cooperative science exchange with universities in the United States, Britain, India, Egypt, Australia, Thailand, South Korea, China, Brazil, Malaysia, and Russia. The International Center conducts a 6-month Japanese education program before entering graduate school, offers extra-curricular Japanese training courses, and advises on academic and daily life. The University of Toyama will uphold a global standard of education and research integrated with life sciences, natural sciences and arts, and social sciences open to the regional community and the world. The University will nurture our students with a strong sense of mission and creativity based on respect for human dignity. In so doing, we aim to become a comprehensive university that prepares our graduates to be creative and to have a strong sense of mission: To encourage students' independent study initiatives, respond to various learning needs, and assure high-quality education, we will enhance our educational environment and improve our educational system. In our undergraduate programs, we will enhance our liberal arts education and professional education courses and develop well-rounded creative students capable of contributing to the knowledge-based global community, keeping pace with the growing importance of new knowledge, information, and technology. In our graduate programs, we will further systematize and improve professional education and develop students capable of taking on and solving the various problems of the 21st century. In addition to emphasizing fundamental research, the University of Toyama will seek solutions to the modern community's various problems. By promoting interdisciplinary research, we aim to share advanced research with the region and the world: We will value fundamental research and promote the development of scholarship and promote applied research. We will maintain a healthy and competitive research environment and build a basis for world-class research. We will actively seek out embryonic research and support its development. We will promote research that takes advantage of our region's characteristics and use the fruits of the research to develop the local and international community. The University is now an academic and research center consisting of eight faculties, including Humanities, Human Development, Economics, Science, Medicine, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering and Art and Design, an institute, and a hospital. The University strongly believes in the integration of intellectual resources from across the globe. Under the rubric 'Integrating knowledge of the East and West,' the University of Toyama has been pursuing academic excellence by exchanging ideas with various countries in both East Asia and the rest of the world. Our Museum of Materia Medica, which houses a collection of traditional natural and herbal medicines from throughout the world, and the Lafcadio Hearn Library, which houses a collection of books owned by this renowned western scholar of Japan, are two examples of our 'Integrating knowledge of the East and West'. The consolidation of three universities has brought together each constituent's achievements, University and broadened Toyama's academic and social environment. In this spirit in the new University of Toyama will endeavor to contribute to local, national, and international society in the 21st century.

In the 21st century, we will be called upon to create a sustainable society in symbiosis with nature while guaranteeing safety, security, and prosperity for all. Young engineers will be the driving force that ensures that we meet these lofty goals, with their passion for high technology and their inventive "engineering spirit." Toyama Prefectural University offers specialized knowledge and education in engineering disciplines, with six undergraduate study courses and a graduate school with 5-degree programs. At our University, we provide an excellent educational environment for research to awaken and foster our students' "engineering spirit." Toyama Prefectural University was founded in 1990, with a mission to: Contribute to the betterment of the Prefecture and its residents, Work toward a better future, Provide innovative education. Toyama Prefectural University (TPU) seeks to expand its range of vision, ethical sense of environment, and environmental literacy for a sustainable society. TPU offers an educational program to ensure that all university graduates are environmentally literate and have the awareness and understanding to be ecologically responsible citizens. The University Library is a circular two-story building, having a total floor area of 2,440m². The lower floor offers an open shelving stack room, carrels, and group study rooms; the mezzanine floors feature reading desks and tables. The upper floor has the entrance gate, the information counter, serial and reference collections, and a viewing room equipped with DVD players. Collaborative learning tables are provided in the study space in front of the entrance gate. The library houses approximately 167,000 volumes, 3,800 periodicals including electronic journals, and 600 multimedia materials. Natural science and engineering materials are featured, while literature and the social sciences are also held. Faculty members and students of Toyama Prefectural University can search books or journals on-site with librarians or online using the library database. The library is open to community residents as well. Over 36,000 people visit the library every year. Cooperation with the community and industry is one of the most important outreach activities of the University. Since its foundation, the center has worked as the gateway to the University for citizens and industry. The center has been supported by the "Kenkyu- Kyoryokukai" (The Society for the Promotion of Cooperative Research), which was also established in 2004. It now consists of 211 enterprises and 14 individuals. Toyama Prefectural University maintains one of Japan's top success rates in securing employment upon graduation. The Career Center promotes" broad-based life career education" to build in students a spirit of independence that supports effective decisions on career choices in collaboration with various organizations and business communities in the area. The University welcomes international students who wish to study in any of its programs. It also invites teachers and researchers from abroad who can work with its faculty and enrich its educational and research projects. Research resulting from such exchanges is reported at international conferences for academic and industrial advancement.
