The founding foundation of Toros University is Mersin Education Foundation. The Mersin Education Foundation is a non-profit educational foundation established in 1979 to provide services in education. Idealistic teachers founded the Mersin Education Foundation. Currently, eight members of the Mersin Education Foundation's 12-person-trustee and four members of the 5-person administrative board are educators. The Mersin Education Foundation is the leader in various areas of education in the region. The Mersin Education Foundation is the first Turkish school to have established a school that teaches a foreign language (English). This first primary school teaches foreign languages beginning from kindergarten, the first private science high school, and the first summer school in this region. The Mersin Education Foundation has seven schools in Mersin and Tarsus at Pre-School Education, Primary Education, Anatolian High School, Science High School, Classical High School, and Foreign Language Intensive High School. Private Toro's schools belong to the Mersin Education Foundation and are among the oldest and largest educational institutions in the region. Toros Schools have many graduates who served in all academicians, bureaucrats, technocrats, artists, and business both in Turkey and abroad. The Mersin Education Foundation was founded in 1964 by a group of school managers, teachers, and students' parents. They formed together to overcome the threat of closing down Toros College in 1979 due to economic reasons. Established in order to provide top-level education services, the Mersin Education Foundation has been successfully developing its educational facilities by ideal educational conditions and by opening schools offering different types of education services such as Pre-school Education, Primary Education, Science High School, Anatolian High School, Super High School, and Summer School. Toros Sports Club, founded in Mersin Education Foundation, has made essential contributions to amateur sports activities. Mersin Education Foundation schools have won numerous awards, including world and Turkish winners, in science and art besides sports facilities and physical facilities and competent staff. International folklore festivals organized in cooperation with various institutions abroad, summer school, youth exchange projects, international programs such as Globe studies have achieved significant achievements. The foundation, which uses all of its income for services in education, has provided educational scholarships for several students so far. The Mersin Education Foundation grants hundreds of primary and secondary education scholarships, not less than 10% of the total number of schools they support, every year. In addition to these scholarships, a certain number of scholarships are awarded to a certain number of higher education students every year following the foundation's facilities. Since 2004-2005 academic years, UNICEF's "Haydi Kızlar Okula" campaign has been actively supported, and the Mersin Education Foundation is educating 20 female students. This number continues to increase with new students each year.
