We are proudly co-educational from Early Learning until Year 4, and from Year 5 to Year 12, we take a girls only approach. For over 140 years, Toorak College has been committed to girls' education and has played a significant role in shaping the lives of thousands of women over many generations. At Toorak College, we advocate for girls' education, yet we understand that the world does not cater to a single-gender. We do not seek to replicate the world; we seek to challenge it by offering our students a learning environment that enables them to achieve their personal best while also discovering their passions. Educational research and our experience tell us that single-sex education offers girls the most excellent chance to ignore stereotypes, develop healthy self-worth, and grow in confidence. Girls in single-sex schools perform better academically than their counterparts in co-educational schools. Girls at girls' schools have "higher aspirations", "greater motivation" and are "challenged to achieve more than their female peers". An all-girl environment can stimulate discussion, dialogue, and self-discovery when designed and built by experts in girls' education and centered around developmental milestones. For girls, single-sex settings result in much more favorable attitudes towards mathematics and science-related subjects than those in co-educational settings. An all-girl environment allows more opportunity for girls to take on leadership roles. Students who had previously held a leadership role enjoyed significantly higher levels of social efficacy relative to those who had no leadership role experience. Single-gender classes provide a learning environment where the female voice is not marginalized. The personal attributes of the teachers, most notably their encouragement, care, and availability, motivate these female students from single-gender schools to excel. We are proud advocates of girls' education from Year 5 onwards to ensure our students are as confident, as resilient, and as strong as they possibly can be. As specialists in girls' education in the senior years, Toorak College is set to become an all-girls' school from Prep-Year 12 in the future. We will enroll our last boys into Prep in 2022 to receive a nurturing and holistic education, integrating within our Junior School community until they complete Year 4. Four hundred years ago, English woman Mary Ward faced extraordinary opposition to establish the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) - also known as the Loreto Sisters. In Australia, the foundation was led by Mother Mary Gonzaga Barry IBM, who, in 1875, established Catholic primary and secondary schools in Ballarat. Today, there are seven Loreto Schools in Australia and over 90 throughout the rest of the world. Loreto Toorak was established in 1924 and continues this worldwide tradition. Our goal is to foster the foundation for a mature and robust faith in each student – in God, herself, and life. The qualities of freedom, justice, and sincerity are at the core of Mary Ward's spirit. Her understanding of freedom was grounded in her sense of personal relationship with God. She believed that each of us has access to God's loving care in our everyday life experience. This is the truth that sets us free. It is inner freedom, accepting of self, open to others, and trusting of life. Justice, as Mary Ward describes it, involves personal integrity based on a harmonious relationship with God, other people, and with the whole of creation.
