At Tec-NQ, trades are a career of the first choice. Tec-NQ is a registered training organization (RTO) and a senior secondary school that has been in operation since 2007. Tec-NQ provides a range of training and educational programs to Townsville and the North Queensland region, including full-time apprentice training, demand industry training, pre-employment programs, and school-based apprentice programs. Students that complete the school-based apprentice program have the opportunity to complete Year 12 with an apprenticeship, their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Certificate II qualifications in Business, Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways, IT, and a Certificate I or II in their chosen trade. Tec-Prep has been developed in response to critical work-related issues facing young people today and into the future. This is a world-leading, future-oriented Program, equal in quality, value, and rigor to more traditional academic programs. The difference is that Trades will be the goal. The Australian Government has invested $5.1 million to pilot the P-TECH model in Australia. In 2016, Tec-NQ was selected as one of fourteen pilot schools to establish a P-TECH (Pathways to Technology) program in partnership with the local industry. The program introduces emerging technologies through the 2018 Y10 Tec-PREP program. Up to 20 students will be selected to participate in an exclusive senior school STEM pilot introduced in alignment with the trade programs commencing in 2019. Initially founded as the Australian Technical College North Queensland, the organization was founded as part of Australian Technical College’s program. 2009 saw the closure of this program and the launch of Tec-NQ as an independent organization in early 2010. Tec-NQ has grown progressively since its inception, and currently, students and apprentices in Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrotechnology, Automotive, Engineering, and IT. In 2015 Tec-NQ opened a Regional Training Accommodation Facility (RTAF) for both regionally-based students and apprentices. Tec-NQ also delivers UEE30811 Certificate III in Electrotechnology – noncompliance in Mackay for apprenticeship training. The Tec-NQ Board and Staff are proud to serve the local community.
