UT is Estonia's leading center of research and training. It preserves the Estonian people's culture and spearheads the country's reputation in research and provision of higher education. UT belongs to the top 1.2% of the world's best universities. As Estonia's national university, UT stresses the importance of international co-operation and partnerships with reputable research universities worldwide. The university's strong research potential is evidenced by the fact that the University of Tartu has been invited to join the Coimbra Group, a prestigious club of renowned research universities. UT includes four faculties. To support and develop its students and academic staff's professional competence, the university has entered into bilateral co-operation agreements with 79 partner institutions in 31 countries. The University of Tartu was founded in 1632 by the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus. It was initially called Academia Dorpatensis. Johan Skytte, governor of Livonia, made the necessary preparations for creating a university in Tartu (then Dorpat). Academia Dorpatensis, modeled after the University of Uppsala in Sweden, was intended to pursue research and advance learning in various disciplines. The University of Tartu (UT) has continued to adhere to this approach throughout the centuries and remains today the only classical university in Estonia. Research at UT focuses on subjects as diverse as medicine and philosophy, genetics, and computer science. The first students enrolled 20-21 April 1632. The opening ceremony of Academia Dorpatensis (Academia Gustaviana) took place on 15 October in the same year. The academy in Tartu functioned with philosophy, law, theology, and medical faculties based on the University of Uppsala privileges. On account of the Russian-Swedish War, the University of Tartu moved to Tallinn in 1656, and in 1665, it closed down. In 1690 Tartu became a university town again. Academia Gustavo-Carolina moved shortly after from Tartu to Pärnu due to the coalition against Sweden and the Great Famine of 1695-1697. Academia Gustavo-Carolina, which had opened in Pärnu on 28 August 1699, was closed because of the surrender to Russian forces on 12 August 1710 during the Northern War. According to the capitulation act, the Russians had agreed to keep the university in Pärnu. In the 17th century, future outstanding Swedish scientists Urban Hiärne, Olof Verelius, Arvid Moller, and others studied at the university. Among the academic staff were: Friedrich Menius, professor of history (the history of Livonia, the first scientific approach to Estonian folklore) Sven Dimberg, professor of mathematics (the first in the world to deliver lectures based on Newton's theory) Olaus Hermelin, professor of rhetoric and poetry and Lars Micrander, professor of medicine (the founder of balneology, the discoverer of natural mineral water springs). At the end of the 17th century, the university's mentality and outlook on the world substantially impacted Descartes' philosophy. With the opening of Academia Gustaviana's printing press in 1631 (it was opened at the secondary school of Tartu, the university's predecessor), book printing in Estonia began. Tartu Art College (TAC) is the only institution of higher education in applied arts in Estonia. TAC offers seven curricula in the three fields of design, conservation/restoration, and the arts: photography, painting, wall painting's restoration, media, advertisement design, furniture and restoration, leather design and restoration, sculpture, and textile. The curricula are equivalent to Bachelor's studies. TAC's vision: TAC is an ethical, open, and consistent institution of higher education that encourages innovative thinking. TAC has become an essential shaper of Estonian life in education, art, and culture. TAC has stood out with its openness and activeness to participate in shaping society and public spaces. TAC has created an environment that supports internationalization and has made its studies international in Estonia by involving foreign experts and lecturers in studies and participating in international projects held in Estonia. The world is based on myths, beliefs, and stories of something that existed before us. Do we still sense these stories and believe that these things once happened? A myth is like a story that does not fade away; instead, it becomes a fairytale that everyone not necessarily believes but cannot ignore. What kind of myths do we connect with the specialty of textiles? Is it still seems to be a field in which great things can be made of non-existent materials with non-existent equipment on a non-existent budget? How much digital processes and a shift in the way people perceive the world changes the standard definition of the textile as material? Is textile still a warm, tactile, soft material? Do a textile artist and designer only work with textile materials? Is it possible to create textile art and design without using textile materials? Tartu Art College has invited to participate in the exhibition textile students from different countries. At the gallery will be exhibited approximately 30 works from six universities: Art Academy of Latvia (Latvia), CIT Crawford College of Art and Design (Ireland), Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Strzemiński Academy of Art Łódź (Poland), Vilnius Academy of Arts (Lithuania) and Tartu Art College (Estonia). Inside the exhibition will also be presented TAC department of Textile handcrafted project about mythological seats, created by fourth-year students and made in cooperation with second-year students. A particular area will be created for presenting the MultiWeave - applied research project started by Kadi Pajupuu, where first-year students use the logic of added manufacturing (similar to 3D printers) to investigate the possibilities to "weave" textile material. The studies' nominal length is four years, and the curriculum volume is 240 ECTS credits. The general condition for enrolling in Tartu Art College in secondary education or a corresponding foreign classification. State examinations' results are not required. Each candidate can apply for two curricula. Student vacancies are filled based on the results of the entrance examinations. Candidates can take a preparatory course, which advises the participants based on the entrance examinations' requirements. In 2013 Enterprise and Development Centre was created to raise the awareness of entrepreneurship among students and link TAC with the business environment. The center co-ordinates business-related projects and communication with the public, private, and non-profit sectors. The center aims to develop cooperation between TAC and other higher education institutions and development organizations to create students' opportunities to be involved in collaborative projects. This helps to familiarize students with the business environment. Tartu Art College (TAC) participates in different cooperation projects and performs commissioned works in three more expansive areas: design, conservation/restoration, and fine art. We collaborate with companies, the public sector, and private individuals. In the field of conservation/restoration, we have collaborated with different Estonian memory institutions. This publication introduces different projects carried out in public space, but also different technological and design solutions. You can also find examples in the field of conservation and restoration. The common feature of all the projects is that they have been performed in collaboration with different partners or commissioning parties.
