UW Tacoma is an urban-serving university providing access to students in a way that transforms families and communities. We impact and inform economic development through community-engaged students and faculty. We conduct research that is of direct use to our community and region. And most importantly, we seek to be connected to our community's needs and aspirations. UW Tacoma is one of three campuses that make up the University of Washington: the 156-year-old Seattle campus and the Tacoma and Bothell campuses, both founded in 1990. We offer many of the same educational qualities as our sister universities — a vibrant campus setting top-drawer faculty known for their teaching ability, a rigorous, interdisciplinary curriculum, and high social responsibility standards. UW Tacoma's diverse student body includes a broad range of ethnic and family backgrounds, ages, interests, and experiences. More than 80 percent of students transfer to UW Tacoma from one of the many community colleges in the area or other universities. First-year students from high schools all over the Puget Sound and beyond make up a growing portion of students. Add to the mix students returning to school after years away, military personnel and their families, and professionals working on new career goals. Our students create a kaleidoscope of perspectives crucial to learning. At UW Tacoma, students learn in small classes, getting to know their faculty while participating in research and service projects. First-year students complete an innovative core curriculum, which blends different fields of study into interdisciplinary classes. Courses might mix art and ecology, or business and social science. The result is a rich learning environment where students are encouraged to challenge themselves. UW Tacoma is an urban-serving university, closely linked with Tacoma and the South Puget Sound. A transfer applicant has attended a college or university after high school graduation (summer excluded) but has not yet earned a bachelor's degree. (Students who have already earned a bachelor's degree should apply as a post-baccalaureate student.) You are considered an international student if you are not a U. S. citizen or permanent resident. You plan to attend a college, university, or other post-secondary education institution in the U.S. This includes applicants that hold U.S. visas as students, exchange visitors, or other non-immigrant classifications. A graduate degree can be the key to advancing your career by developing your expertise and focusing your studies. UW Tacoma offers graduate education in various engaging, innovative, and designed areas to help each student succeed. Applicants at the graduate level must apply to both a UW Tacoma degree program and the UW Graduate School. Requirements vary by program. We believe students from all economic backgrounds should have the opportunity to attend the University of Washington, Tacoma. Finances should not be a barrier to getting a world-class education. Each year the University of Washington Tacoma awards financial aid to more than 70% of our students. We have a wide array of federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs to help students at all economic levels pay for their education.
