Founded more than a century ago and located in Saratoga Springs, New York, on a beautiful 1,000-acre campus, Skidmore is a highly regarded liberal arts college known for its creative approaches to just about everything. In keeping with the college's founding principle of linking theoretical with applied learning, the Skidmore curriculum balances a commitment to the liberal arts and sciences to prepare professions, careers, and community leadership. Co-curricular and field-experience broad scope opportunities enhance education in the classroom, laboratory, and studio. Underpinning the entire enterprise are faculty members' scholarly and creative interests, which inform their teaching and contribute, in the broadest sense, to the advancement of learning. The college also embraces its responsibility as an educational and cultural resource for alumni and a host of nontraditional student populations and provides educational leadership in the Capital District and beyond. Skidmore offers 43 majors in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and career-specific fields such as business, social work, education, and exercise science. Add to this the prominence of the performing and visual arts, which have long set Skidmore apart. Faculty have earned recognition from Guggenheim, Pulitzer, and Emmy awards to fellowships and grants from Fulbright, MacArthur, and the National Science Foundation. Creativity is at our core. Preparing Socially Responsible Graduates for Complexity, Diversity, and Change. Skidmore College is committed to integrative learning to prepare students to be socially responsible citizens in a complex world characterized by diversity and continual change. Integrative learning happens across disciplinary boundaries. Over time, as one progresses through a Skidmore education by connecting curricular and co-curricular experiences, and across the border between the campus and the broader world. Skidmore students engage in integrative learning from their first semester at Skidmore via their first-year seminar, considering a topic through an interdisciplinary lens. Campus partners such as the Tang Teaching Museum and Scribner Library provide opportunities for students to make connections: cultivate breadth and depth of knowledge, connect theory to practice, acquire transferable intellectual and practical skills and develop self-awareness. Integrative learning will be bolstered through Skidmore's Center for Integrated Sciences (CIS), a state-of-the-art transformational learning space. The center, whose construction will begin this spring, is designed as a hub where unique interdisciplinary connections between and among the sciences, arts, humanities, and social sciences can be cultivated through a general education curriculum, delivery of majors, minors, and programs, and opportunities for collaborative research and creative work across disciplines. Service-learning coursework includes community service as an experiential learning technique to deepen students' understanding of course content, build their skills in applying theory to practice, increase their experiences with diversity, and develop their interest in and commitment to social action and social problem-solving. Service-learning is focused on student development and provides volunteer and technical resources to communities and strengthens town-gown relations.
