ShanghaiTech is a young resource-rich university with a modern residential campus in the heart of Shanghai Pudong's Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park. With an academic focus on STEAM research, ShanghaiTech is committed to carrying out China's national development strategy and nurturing the next generation of innovative scientists, inventors, and entrepreneurs. With the backing and support of the Shanghai Municipal Government and China Academy of Science, ShanghaiTech's five schools and three research institutes seek cutting-edge solutions to address the challenges that China and the world face in the fields of energy, material, environment, human health, and artificial intelligence. ShanghaiTech is a small-scale research university with a beautiful modern residential campus in the heart of Shanghai Pudong's Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park. With an academic focus on STEAM research, ShanghaiTech is committed to carrying out China's national development strategy and nurturing a new generation of innovative scientists, inventors, and entrepreneurs. With more than 60 clubs and societies, ShanghaiTech's energetic student body of China is actively involved in shaping ShanghaiTech's campus culture. ShanghaiTech students and faculty from 15 countries play an essential role in ShanghaiTech's development as a vibrant academic community. Students can bring their concerns directly to school leaders who value their participation and perspective. The vibrant atmosphere of ShanghaiTech's campus life can be felt in the campus' athletic center, five dining halls, student center, library, and dormitories. With daily lectures, recreational sports, and regular activities, ShanghaiTech provides a well-rounded and stimulating education for its 1200 undergrads and 1500 graduate and Ph.D. students. Undergraduates are part of small mentor groups. Each group of five to seven students is paired with a full-time professor and two CAS adjunct professors who live in student dormitories on a rotating basis, lead exciting seminars, and provide academic guidance and personal support. ShanghaiTech's three undergraduate dorms and seven graduate/Ph.D. dorms are comfortable and designed to encourage interaction. Undergrads live three to a room, while graduate students live two to a room. Each dorm has a cozy hang-out space, washing machines, and showering facilities. All ShanghaiTech undergraduate students participate in summer programs to open their eyes to the world around them. First- and second-year students travel to remote parts of China to participate in social engagement projects working on poverty reduction. Teams of students and professors work together on projects on traditional culture, environment and energy, urbanization, technological innovation, and educational development. In 2017, several teams won awards for their work in Yunnan, Jiangxi, Guizhou, and Shaanxi Provinces. Third-year students participate in summer industry engagement programs, visiting companies, and hi-tech parks to learn about business trends and explore career opportunities. In 2017, ShanghaiTech student teams completed industry research projects at more than 70 domestic and multi-national companies. ShanghaiTech believes that innovation comes from collaboration. Interdisciplinary research is highly valued, and ShanghaiTech faculty are encouraged to collaborate across disciplines and schools. Our location stone's throw distance from the high-tech R&D labs and national research facilities of Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park naturally fosters a collaborative relationship between the university, national research facilities, and multi-national industry partners. Through linking innovative research to development and commercialization, ShanghaiTech hopes to play an essential role in finding innovative solutions to address China's most pressing challenges. ShanghaiTech University is playing an essential role in constructing national facilities in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, such as the Free Electron Laser Facility, the Live Cell Imagining Facility, and the Ultra-Intense and Ultrashort Pulse Laser Facility initiated by the Zhangjiang National Science Center.
