Average class sizes at Rosseau Lake College range from 15—25 students. Our students are known, counseled, and cared for. Our campus consists of four boarding residences and is home to our boarding students and the majority of the teaching staff. We take great pleasure in finding our students' strengths, building their confidence, and nourishing their potential through a personalized learning environment that will prepare them for university, other post-secondary opportunities, and the challenges of the future. Rosseau Lake College's mission is to graduate students with a strong personal brand through a rich culture of discovery. With an engaging and personalized learning system, students will build their brands through knowledge acquisition, workplace experience, and extensive exposure to Rosseau Lake College's natural and pristine setting. Their brand will set them apart in their further education and employment endeavors, and they will continue to return to the school throughout their lives. It was not until 1967 that Rosseau Lake College came into being. The founding Chair of the Board, Roger Morris, hired Mr. R. H. Perry to be its first headmaster. The first session began with 27 students (all boys at this point) and ten more enrolled throughout the year. Students were taught in the main house lounge, the library, and the old laundry room! Grades 8 to 11 were offered in the first year. In the school's second year, 65 boys were enrolled, and the healthy pioneer spirit that exists today at RLC was born. Although many of the original Eaton dwellings have fallen victim to age, antiquated wiring, or overheated chimneys, the site remains unique among independent schools globally. Lady Eaton's gardens still grace the campus, the waters still sparkle, and the winds still whisper through the pines. One of the old canons from Fort Kawandag sits outside the log cabin Lady Eaton used as a sewing room and retreat from the main house. At Rosseau Lake College, culture is at the core of all we do, including academics. Each morning we gather as an entire community in a circle: we sing, give gratitude, look to the day ahead and generally look after each other. This supportive circle then extends to the classroom, and it is within the close-knit community that students best learn and thrive. We understand the incredible value of our small class sizes, but this is only one part of genuinely engaging students in their capacity to think, respond, innovate, create, and reflect. Our Personalized Learning Community is a strategic response to the challenge of motivating students in their learning. Our educators use assessment tools and practices to understand individual student learning styles better. This ensures that teaching approaches and learning environments directly respond to the particular strengths, challenges, and interests of the students. As a result, the learner is truly at the forefront of the learning process. Teachers always collaborate as professionals to create a holistic learning community focused on building relevant skills and competencies for students' benefit now and in the future. Rosseau Lake College believes in providing a world-class, hands-on education focusing on the environment, 21st Century skills, and entrepreneurship. We love to maintain the perhaps unlikely balance of connecting learning to the outdoors and our thriving Outdoor Education Program while also applying cutting-edge technology in a meaningful way. With a core curriculum based on the Ontario Ministry of Education descriptions, Rosseau Lake College believes strongly in understanding each student's learning preferences to foster engagement in the learning journey. Using authentic, real-world problems in the learning process, an RLC education is meaningful and relevant, allowing for a higher degree of engagement and success. In their 12th Grade year, RLC students are asked to stand before their entire community and provide a Personal Brand statement. In doing so, the students capture a sense of whom they are as a person and a learner, reflecting on individual strengths and challenges and the many RLC experiences that have helped shape a sense of self.
