The academic affairs area supports the university's mission to provide an opportunity for students to receive a quality education that focuses on the development of the whole person, including the intellectual, spiritual, social, and physical dimensions. The undergraduate curriculum is built on a broad liberal arts foundation emphasizing communicative and quantitative skills independent thinking tolerance of diverse points of view cultural, historical, and ethical awareness and preparation for leadership, civic responsibility, and life-long learning. The academic affairs program also includes a broad spectrum of student academic support services and educational enhancement opportunities through academic honor societies, domestic and study abroad programs, community, and regional outreach, academic competition and clubs, and organizations. Research is the repeated, systematic process of testing hypotheses to develop theories. It can include basic science, clinical, social science, or translational research and encompass testing on human subjects and animals. Before beginning, the researcher may need to complete several certifications and gain approval from the university's Institutional Review Board. These processes are in place to protect the participants and researchers. The University of Pikeville is committed to every student's success and provides academic assistance to everyone enrolled in coursework at the university. The Academic Assistance Center offers academic tutoring, primarily in mathematics, the sciences, and writing, and is staffed with current students who have excelled academically. There is no fee for university students who take advantage of this service. The small college environment and close personal attention that is so much a part of the University of Pikeville experience provides opportunities to fit in and stand out. Students may choose from more than 40 clubs and groups, including academic, service, leadership, and Greek societies. The Disability Resource Center (DRC) supports the university's commitment by coordinating accommodations so that every student with disabilities has equal access to actively participate in all facets of the educational experience at UPIKE.
