Owing to its excellent research, a unique study environment, and a tight-knit international network of partners, the University of Passau is a highly visible and highly respected academic and research institution in the heart of Europe. Internationally successful high-technology companies and a vibrant start-up scene, coupled with a rich culture and Lower Bavarian traditions, make Passau a city with a high quality of life. Some 13,000 students hailing from 100 countries and more than 1,100 staff in primary employment in academic and academic support divisions are engaged in research, teaching, and higher education support functions on our university campus, located just a stone's throw from the Old Town of Passau. This campus is not only well-equipped in terms of its technical infrastructure but has also won numerous architecture prizes. Internationalism has always been a hallmark of the University, as well as an essential strategic aim. Vibrant partnerships underpin our worldwide connections we maintain globally, particularly the cross-border co-operative and research partnerships of our academics. Our students and academics are also involved in networks that reach far beyond Passau. Many degree courses give students the chance to earn an international double degree, and all our students have access to a broad range of language courses and student exchange programs. Our subject-specific language programs in Law, Business/Economics, Cultural Studies/International Relations, and Computer Science/Mathematics ideally complement our students' degree studies and give them an edge on the international labor markets. The University regularly attains top positions in academic rankings in Bavaria and the German-speaking world, e.g., in Law, Business and Economics, Computer Science, Communication Studies, Political Science and Cultural Studies. Representative surveys, such as the Study Quality Monitor, regularly attest to the high level of student satisfaction. Our graduates are highly sought-after by employers, as they are equipped with the knowledge needed to embark on their careers and highly motivated. This is demonstrated by the additional qualifications and the practical knowledge they gain on top of their regular studies. Many are engaged in projects outside of their degree studies and in the various student clubs and societies, which provide a valuable contribution to campus life and the international profile of the University. The University of Passau stands for excellent research and innovative teaching and the diversity and an openness to the world that are essential preconditions for such excellence. In Passau, science, culture, and an entrepreneurial spirit find their unique combination of people worldwide meet in the baroque Old Town and talk to each other about their academic, cultural, or entrepreneurial projects. This spirit of togetherness is one of our greatest strengths. State, society, commerce and industry, technology, government, culture, and education are interconnected on a global scale and affected by increasing digitalization. Academia must react to these changing conditions by re-examining and adapting its analytical and interpretative paradigms and patterns of action to find answers to the questions that arise due to these developments. The University of Passau is ready to meet this challenge! Digitalization, Networked Society and (Internet) Cultures and the focal topics of Europe and Global Transformation as well as Migration, Sustainable Development, and Just Order form the overarching themes under which research and teaching are conducted at the University: this reflects the interdisciplinary identity of our University and the long-standing tradition of co-operation among its four faculties. We aim to become a forward-looking, internationally renowned, and attractive university that produces excellent, competitive research and delivers robust and innovative teaching. By 2028, the University intends to become one of the leading European centers of basic research in digitalization's societal implications. Any university that strives to maintain sustained excellence in research and teaching must provide an excellent support base for those setting out their research careers. To this end, the University has made it a core objective to give its early career researchers the best possible support for gaining qualifications and participating in (international) networks. This is particularly true for the University's female academics. The University enables its early career researchers to engage in interdisciplinary, personal exchange and participate in the latest developments in co-operative, interdisciplinary, and international research. We strive to ensure that all students and staff have equal access to the outstanding offerings of the University, irrespective of age, gender, ethnic background, sexual orientation, philosophy, religious views, disability, or (chronic) illness. The University makes continuous efforts to realize gender equality, facilitate reconcilability of family and study or work, and strengthen and leverage the advantages of the diversity among students and staff. Freedom from discrimination is a prerequisite for sustainability, international appeal, competitiveness, innovation, and academic excellence. As a university, we consider it one of our primary duties to highlight academic research's social relevance and make new knowledge accessible. The University embraces its regional responsibility and sees itself as a driver of innovation that provides valuable impulses for society. By engaging in the transfer of knowledge that can be applied in a social, cultural, or economic context, we aim to take a prominent, leading role in shaping modern knowledge societies. Business start-up support is crucial in achieving this aim.
