  1. We keep a close eye on worker's health and the environment from a medical perspective. The University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan, as an educational institution for the training of qualified occupational physicians and the promotion of occupational health, was established in 1978 under the enactment of the Industrial Safety and Health Act in 1972 for the securement of occupational physicians experienced in occupational health management. By this act, every company over a particular scale is obliged to appoint a physician for managing the healthcare of its workers. The purpose for which the university was established is twofold. The other is to contribute to promoting the medical, nursing, and healthcare sciences relevant to the working environment and workers' health and developing medical professionals in these fields. Based on the education, research, and medical examinations relating to general medicine, our university promotes education and research that mostly pertains to occupational medicine and occupational healthcare and produces many excellent occupational health physicians and related healthcare professionals in society. At the same time, we advance research in related fields and assume a central role in the local people's healthcare. With technological innovation, information technology, and globalization in modern society, employment formats have become diversified, and working conditions and environments are experiencing dramatic changes. In such situations, "managing worker's health as the lifeblood of the social infrastructure" is becoming more critical than ever. As a result, our university is expected to play a markedly increasing leadership role. The University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan, was certified as conforming to the University Standards of the Japan University Accreditation Association. The accreditation is valid from April 1st, 2014, to March 31st, 2021. The University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan, was accredited in the 2014 academic year as conforming to the Functional Assessment of Hospitals, 3rdG: Ver. 1.0, a third-party evaluation of medical institutions conducted by the Japan Council for Quality Health Care. The accreditation is valid from April 15th, 2015, to April 24th, 2020. The Facility for Education and Research Support is organized by close cooperation among the Library, the Shared-Use Research Center, the Animal Research Center, and the Radioisotope Research Center to promote more effective education and research. The university library has a total area of 2,480㎡and includes various types of audiovisual reference observation systems and the reading room. As for library services, the Library maintains a website that makes it possible to freely search for references available in the Library from within or outside the university. Furthermore, e-journals, e-books, and search engines for medical information including "Scopus", "MEDLINE", "CINAHL", "Medical Online", "Ichushi Web", etc., have been introduced for users' convenience. The Library also has a special section for displaying reference materials and newly-arrived materials related to occupational health and is operating a database of the faculty members' research results. In this way, the Library is making efforts to collect and distribute occupational health-related information. Research fields in medical and life sciences are becoming increasingly specialized and compartmentalized, and along with those changes, research environments are also changing significantly. The Shared-Use Research Center includes highly-functional and advanced scientific instrumentation and various technical equipment types, such as an anechoic chamber and an artificial climate chamber for use in experiments in unique environments. As a research facility for shared-use, the center is designed to be of use not only for education and research in the field of occupational and environmental health but also in increasingly diverse research.
