Study Away opportunities offered by Oberlin or by programs affiliated with the college cover a wide range of geographic areas of the world, curricular or academic interests, and program types. Each year, approximately 300 Oberlin students are approved to participate in a semester- or year-long study away programs. A university has several vital missions. One of them is to conduct research and apply the results for the benefit of society. Another is to help people grow by educating them. Yet another is to serve as a cornerstone for building peace in the surrounding community and the world as a whole. The founding ideal of all of J. F. Oberlin University is to foster global citizens based on Christian values. This educational ideal aims not merely to impart book knowledge to students while they are in school but at helping them acquire a broad liberal arts education and the ability to make their own decisions. We seek to nurture individuals who will understand others and deal with circumstances in a spirit of cooperation, no matter what the situation. To make this educational ideal a reality, we offer students a liberal arts education and an international education. We are continually developing new educational activities that are oriented toward the future. Part of J. F. Oberlin University’s creed is the idea of “Gakujijijin”: learning in order to be able to help others. This ideal incorporates all three of the missions mentioned above. Learning entails studying the knowledge that others have discovered and searching for new knowledge, and if you only have the desire, you can go on learning for a lifetime. J. F. Oberlin strives to enrich people’s lives and serve as a foundation for building a peaceful society. Its philosophy is to produce globally-minded citizens following Christian values. It asks its graduates to spread the ideal of “Gakujijijin” around the world. Profile: President Hatayama was born in 1962 in Kagoshima Prefecture. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from J. F. Oberlin University and received a Master of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He went on to get a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He became a professor at J. F. Oberlin University in 2006 and has served as a special assistant to the president, as the dean of the College of Cornerstone Education, as the director of the Center for International Studies as a vice-president of the university. His principal field of study is rhetoric. In April 2018, he became the fifth president in the history of the university. J. F. Oberlin University has nearly 9,000 students, including graduate students and students from overseas. Every year we have about 550 international students enrolled at the university. We have over 140 partner schools in more than twenty countries and regions around the world. Our Japanese students acquire practical experience through various programs, including language study and academic exchange programs, volunteer programs, and internship opportunities. The university has established five overseas offices to carry out various international exchange activities and support students studying abroad. The university’s main campus is in Machida, a suburb of Tokyo. We have two branch campuses: one near Fuchinobe Station in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, and the other in Sendagaya, in the center of Tokyo.
