Northumbria is a research-rich, business-focused, professional university with a global reputation for academic excellence. It is based in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, which is regularly voted the best place in the UK for students. The University has its origins in Rutherford College, founded in 1880. Today, by putting students at the heart of an outstanding experience, and with world-leading research and award-winning partnerships, Northumbria is a new kind of excellent University. Northumbria is top ten in the UK for the number of graduates entering professional employment, and nine out of ten of our graduates are working or studying six months after graduation. We are ranked 21st out of 111 universities in the 2014 Times Higher Education Student Satisfaction Survey. Northumbria works with major employers, including Nike, IBM, Nissan, Proctor & Gamble, the BBC, and the NHS, while more than 560 employers and 60 professional bodies sponsor or accredit the University's programs. Our Board of Governors oversees the institution's activities. It is the governing body with overall responsibility for its mission, strategic performance, resources, and assets. It ensures the accountability of the executive functions. There are 22 Governors with a wide range of academic and non-academic backgrounds. Most of them are external to the University. The Chair of the Board is Chris Sayers. Our Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive is Professor Andrew Wathey. He is the University's principal academic and administrative officer - responsible to and appointed by the Board. He is also the University's Accountable Officer for the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). Our University Executive advises the Vice-Chancellor on matters relating to the management of the University. Its 16 members are the senior academic and professional leadership of the University. Our four academic Faculties are Arts, Design & Social Sciences, Business & Law Engineering & Environment Health & Life Sciences.
