Founded in 1898, Des Moines University comprises three colleges offering eight graduate degrees in medicine and the health sciences. We meet these challenges by emphasizing primary care training and encouraging graduates to practice in rural and underserved areas. The University has been recognized as the nation's top producer of primary care physicians. We also serve our community through the multi-specialty DMU Clinic. We offer family medicine, podiatric medicine and surgery, physical therapy, osteopathic manual medicine, and international travel health services in thousands of patient visits annually. The Center for Teaching and Learning aims to support excellence within Des Moines University's academic community through innovation and collaboration, which enhances instruction, student learning, and assessment. This is accomplished through consultations on various educational topics, providing and utilizing resources, and working with other campus departments to serve needs in various areas, including educational technology, assessment, digital accessibility, and teaching and learning approaches. The DMU campus is a close-knit, collaborative environment that allows students to learn and share ideas while enjoying themselves and forging lifelong friendships. DMU offers many opportunities for students to get involved in experiences outside the classroom. There are countless student clubs and organizations and intramural sports sponsored by our state-of-the-art Wellness Center to help students break from studying. The Office of Research strives to develop the University as a cultivator of exceptional faculty and student researchers who discover and disseminate new knowledge. Every day at DMU, dedicated faculty, staff, and students create and apply knowledge to provide solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems. The financial aid office provides students with the necessary financial aid information to help identify options available to finance their education. The office provides various services to students, including financial aid presentations, small group workshops, and individual counseling sessions throughout their education. The history of Des Moines University reflects a continuing commitment to teaching, learning, and serving. They were founded in 1898 by Dr. Summerfield Saunders Still and his wife, Dr. Ella Still, the Dr. S.S. Still, the College of Osteopathy was located at 1422 West Locust Street in downtown Des Moines. The College Infirmary, located across the street, provided students with an opportunity to work directly with patients during their medical training. Students' coursework included classes such as descriptive anatomy, the theory of osteopathy, and dissection. From its founding through the early 1920s, the College admitted large numbers of female students, sometimes comprising over one-third of the class, who attended classes and trained alongside their male classmates as equals.
