Misericordia University is a Catholic university in northeast Pennsylvania, founded by the Sisters of Mercy, that provides caring, motivated students with a challenging education. Misericordia University provides quality education through the tenets of mercy, service, justice, and hospitality—charisms set forth by the school's founders. These principles have guided the university for more than 90 years. Misericordia University is committed to providing the best scholarly and educational environment possible to students while they are enrolled and preparing them for life after graduation. Graduates receive a diploma and can participate in the school's Guaranteed Placement Program (GPP) assurance as well. The Guaranteed Placement Program promises that, within six months of graduation, students will have a position in the career of their choice or be enrolled in graduate school, or the university will provide a paid internship in the student's field of study. The faculty and staff work tirelessly to provide the best learning environment, teaching students in the classroom and leading them into the broader community through internships, volunteerism, and community-based engagement. Our 37 academic majors include many in the liberal arts and sciences, business and education fields, as well as health care. While many of our students are undergraduates, we offer a range of masters and doctoral degrees in full- and part-time formats. Over 90 percent of Misericordia undergraduates find employment or enter a graduate studies program within six months of graduation, demonstrating the value of a Misericordia degree. Service-learning is a structured learning experience that provides students with the opportunity to meet academic objectives through community service provision. Students work with community partners to develop and implement projects to meet the organization's needs, develop their skills and learning, and reflect on the value of the experience from a community and interpersonal perspective. Strongly connected to our four charisms of Mercy, Service, Justice, and Hospitality, service-learning is a catalyst that fosters lifelong civic engagement and development of ethical values, with the hoped-for outcome of building healthier communities. Service-learning provides real value to the community while simultaneously providing a vehicle for our students to develop their academic knowledge, 21st-century skills, and a broader sense of social responsibility and community awareness. Through strong community partnerships, dedicated staff and faculty, and the hard work and enthusiasm of our students, Misericordia service-learning has made a lasting impact on our local community and beyond. The Study Abroad-Away Office is responsible for delivering international and intercultural study, research, and service abroad opportunities for students at Misericordia University. The programs are designed and developed so that students have the opportunity to explore, grow, and shape their experiences not only as Misericordia students but as citizens of the world, demonstrating the charisms of mercy, service, justice, and hospitality in the increasingly global environment in which they live. Students and faculty interested in studying, research, or service abroad are highly encouraged to do so through this series of well-planned opportunities. These programs vary in duration, but all provide critical intercultural experiences that prepare students for future success.
