You do not have to be Catholic or have any religious affiliation, to be a part of the Marylhurst community. But all of us in the Marylhurst community embrace and respect the Sisters’ values as the foundation for the way we operate. Marylhurst University was founded in 1893 by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. We are Oregon’s oldest Catholic University and were the first liberal arts college for women established in the Northwest. Our founding Sisters believed in educating the whole person through a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. Their mission of serving underserved students continues to inspire us today as we welcome men and women of all faiths and backgrounds, most of whom are non-traditional students returning to school. Need to do some research? How about access a book or article for your class? Visit the online world of Shoen Library for full library services and access to a virtual librarian 24/7. This comes in handy when you need that late-night, last-minute help on a research paper. As a student, you have several rights, and the University has policies outlining our expectations of our students, to ensure the Marylhurst experience is fair and pleasant for all. Everything related to taking classes, student records, transcripts, official forms lives in the Office of the Registrar. That is an excellent office to get to know as a student. If you need to file a class petition, apply for graduation, or get your transcripts, that is the place. Got your MU gear? If not, visit the campus store for incredible Marylhurst swag and products so you can show off your Marylhurst pride. Plus, if you need ample school supplies (like that Sharpie pen that so perfect for writing), go to the store. And did we mention – there is coffee. Beyond our physical campus community, we are super connected across our social media channels, like Facebook and Twitter. They are a great way to know what is happening and how to get involved in campus topics. Not only that, but we have many events going on and our social channels always keep you up-to-date. As a current student at Marylhurst, keeping up with your financial aid is pretty straight forward. Make sure to maintain good grades, attend college, at least half-time as specified by your award letter, and re-apply for financial aid every year. That is the big stuff to keep in mind. And do not forget that financial aid is just part of funding your education. Federal financial aid regulations require you to make “satisfactory academic progress” toward completing your degree to receive federal financial aid. We have the policy to determine what is “satisfactory academic progress” and levels of warning to let you know if you could potentially lose your financial aid due to academic issues. Our satisfactory academic progress policy applies to all federal, state, and institutional aid and all enrolled students at Marylhurst University. After months of extensive analysis and thoughtful deliberation, the Marylhurst University Board of Trustees has voted that the University will stop all operations by the end of 2018. The 50-acre property will be returned to the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, who will make plans for the property in alignment with their mission and values. The Sisters of the Holy Names created Marylhurst nearly 125 years ago with a mission to provide a Catholic, post-secondary liberal arts education to students of all faiths, and with an emphasis on educating ethical leaders of competence, conscience, and compassion who will work to create a more just, humane and sustainable world. We know today that Marylhurst has fulfilled this mission. While this was a painful and challenging decision, we believe it was the right one. The Board’s vote resulted from a long and careful decision-making process that put students, faculty, and staff first, which occurred before the University faced far more significant risks. Like many small, private, liberal arts colleges and universities, we have seen a steady decline in enrollment since the end of the Great Recession. The Board and University leadership reviewed numerous reorganization scenarios and strategies to create alternate forms of revenue. You can read more about these in the Board’s resolution to close. Despite these efforts, we were unable to see a viable financial path that would have enabled us to sustain the high level of academic programming we have always strived, which would not harm our students, faculty, and staff. Unlike other university closures, which have frequently followed a loss of accreditation, mounting debt, recalled loans, or bad audits, we are fortunate to have monitored our situation closely to make this decision before encountering any of those problems. Deciding at the end of the regular academic year also allows us to work with students to consider their options and transfer to other programs next fall or winter or graduate as early as this summer. While this decision is difficult for all of us who cherish this great University and embrace its mission, it is made with a sense of quiet resolve that we have chosen the most responsible and respectful path forward. Our priority over the coming months will be to support our students, faculty, and staff as they process this announcement and plan a transition to continue to pursue their educational and professional goals. Marylhurst is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and has been accredited by NWCCU since 1977. Marylhurst is led by a Board of Trustees and is currently under the direction of President Melody Rose. She is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the University and reports directly to the Board of Trustees. View full university
