LeMoyne-Owen College occupies a beautifully landscaped campus at 807 Walker Avenue in South Memphis. City buses make regular stops throughout the day in front of the campus. LeMoyne-Owen College delivers a transformative experience, educating students for a lifetime of scholarship, leadership, and service through liberal arts, career, and professional studies. To be an exemplary historically black college providing an excellent liberal arts education that transforms urban students, institutions, and communities. The Teaching & Learning Center offers support to students in necessary skills and their chosen academic disciplines. The Center's activities and schedules are designed to meet students' individual needs, as they strengthen their competency areas. Specialists, tutors, and volunteer faculty offer tutorials individually and in small groups. Computer-assisted instruction also is available. During the academic year, mini-workshops on selected topics are offered. Students may self-refer or be recommended by faculty for services. The Center for African and African American Studies offers the campus, the community, and the academic world opportunities for increased knowledge about Africans and African Americans' rich heritage. The Center sponsors workshops, seminars, exhibitions, and lectures that explore historical and cultural issues. The Center's activities are highlighted by the celebration of African-American History Month in February and the Middle Passage's annual commemoration in September. The Center coordinates the African and African-American studies curriculum, including the minor program and the Core African American Heritage course. The Center is also a repository for books, artifacts, and audio and visual tapes on African and African-American studies. Selected materials are available for checkout by students, faculty, and staff. The Office of Academic Support was established to develop and monitor institutional retention efforts and supervise programs and services that enhance the potential for all students' success. The Office of Institutional Research (OIR) is the official source for information about the institution. Data concerning LeMoyne-Owen College, including its students, courses, personnel, programs, and facilities, as well as relevant external data, are available from our office. We are responsible for campus compliance to external reporting to agencies such as the National Center for Education Statistics, the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), and the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association. We also respond to numerous requests from college guidebooks and magazine publishers. Internally, the information we collect is used to support planning, policy development, research, and decision-making. As such, we provide many routine and ad hoc reports to academic administrators, administrative officers, and other members of the College community. The Counseling Center provides a comprehensive set of complementary services, activities, and referrals, which focus on our students' holistic development. The counselors at The LeMoyne-Owen College have the responsibilities that are both internal and external to the Counseling Center. Counseling is a growth process through which students help define goals, make decisions, and solve problems related to personal, social, and academic concerns. Counseling often deals with personal and private issues and is predicated on the principle of confidentiality established by law and professional ethics. Disclosure of information to third parties without the consent of the student/client is prohibited. However, when necessary to protect the student and other persons' safety, disclosure of information about the student/client by faculty and staff to professionals within the College who have cause to know and are in professional positions to assist that student/client is acceptable. The merger of LeMoyne College and Owen College in 1968 joined two institutions, which had rich traditions as private, church-related colleges that have historically served Black students, founded and developed to provide higher education to students in the Mid-South area. LeMoyne Normal and Commercial School opened officially in 1871. However, it began in 1862 when the American Missionary Association sent Lucinda Humphrey to open an elementary school for freedmen and runaway slaves to Camp Shiloh soon after Memphis's occupation by federal troops under General Ulysses S. Grant. The School was moved to Memphis in 1863 but was destroyed by fire in the race riots, which followed federal troops' withdrawal in 1866. As the School was then known, Lincoln Chapel was rebuilt and reopened in 1867 with 150 students and six teachers, but financial problems beset the small School. In 1914, the School was moved from Orleans Street to its present site on Walker Avenue. In that same year, the first building, Steele Hall, was erected on the new campus. LeMoyne developed rapidly. It became a junior college in 1924 and a four-year college in 1930, chartered by the State of Tennessee just four years later. Owen College began in 1947 when the Tennessee Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention bought property on Vance Avenue to build a junior college. After several years of planning, the School opened in 1954 as S. A. Owen Junior College, named in honor of a distinguished religious and civic leader. However, the name was later changed to Owen Junior College. The merger of Owen and LeMoyne Colleges in 1968 joined two religious traditions at the same time that it reinforced the institutions' shared purpose of combining a liberal arts education with career training in a Christian setting.
