Tomakomai Komazawa University is founded on the philosophy of Zen Buddhism. Our education does not aim merely to confer plenty of knowledge and information on students but to develop their subtle character. To achieve this goal, we provide a wide range of courses in our curriculum, practical teaching on Buddhist wisdom. Following the doctrine of "the Fusion of Study and Practice" and "Trust, Sincerity, Respect, and Love," we try to foster people who can both understand the variety of cultures globally and contribute to the welfare of communities they live in. The fundamental philosophy of Tomakomai Komazawa University is expressed in "GYOU-GAKU-ICHI-NYO," that is, "oneness of study and practice." "GYOU" and "GAKU" refer to practice and study, respectively. Human development through the unity of study and practice is the basic principle of our education. "The Fusion of Study and Practice" is embodied in SHIN-SEI-KEI-AI (trust, sincerity, respect, and love). The essence of our education consists of practical approaches that awaken students both to their internal possibility and external diversity to bring them fruitful student life. We hope to nurture students who can fix a steady goal and strive for it from the beginning of their university life. In other words, we wish that each student be equipped with his/her own "navigational system" that neither loses sight of the route nor the goal of his/her life. International studies of our university include studies of both local and overseas cultures and the acquisition of logical thinking and practical ability based on them. We hope that students go abroad and know much more about the variety of cultures and ideas within their student life. These experiences make them realize the importance of their own culture, such as Japanese culture for Japanese students, and to foster the will to know much more about it. Our university cooperates with various universities worldwide and has a system to transfer credit between foreign institutions. We also plan to expand short time visits in order to promote more active exchanges. Located at Tomakomai city, our university assumes our highest priority to provide educational opportunities such as open lectures and library facilities to all city citizens, including high school students in the area. As this connection tightens, students grow their interest in the community and contribute, for example, the city-planning through their ideas. Young and fresh proposals will be powerful incentives for the development of the city. We try to create new co-operations not only with city administrators but also with private industries and organizations. They will also contribute to the employment of graduates. Hokkaido's employment situation is getting harder, and some students hope to get a job in the Tokyo area. We are planning to create a joint system of admission with Komazawa University in Tokyo to accommodate students' demand for employment in the area. Though academic scores may be necessary for some opportunities, much more is potentiality. To wake up student's dormant abilities, we plan to reform the educational system of the university. Komazawa University is one of the oldest universities in Japan. Its history started in 1592 when a seminary was established to be a center of learning for the Soto sect's young monks, one of Japan's two main Zen Buddhist traditions. As is proverbially said, in old bottles, new wine should be put, so we always endeavor to maintain the highest standards in cultivating cultural and social sciences. In other words, Komazawa University will make every effort to realize its purpose as a university by promoting intellectual advancement while efficiently using the advantages of being located in the center of metropolitan Tokyo. The university itself is comprised of eight faculties and twenty-four departments. Also, for students who wish to pursue advanced studies, each department has a graduate school except the Faculty of Global Media Studies and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. There are also eight research institutes. There is a total of 16,000 students, and the university is influential in the arts. The university is located in Komazawa, Setagaya, which is well known as a University and residential area and is about 20 minutes from the center of Tokyo, one of the world's biggest cities. The university is also next to the Tokyo Olympic Memorial Park, so the campus is tranquil and peaceful, surrounded by trees and other plant life. Students can work or read books between classes here, so the campus environment is a suitable place for university life.
