Juntendo was initially founded in 1838 as a Dutch School of Medicine when Western medical education was not yet embedded as a regular part of Japanese society. With the creation of Juntendo, the founders hoped to create a place where people could come together with the shared goal of helping society through the powers of medical education and practices. Their aspirations led to the establishment of Juntendo Hospital, the first private hospital in Japan. Today, Juntendo University continues to pursue innovative approaches to international level education and research to apply society's results. The mission of Juntendo University is to strive for advances in society through education, research, and healthcare. To accomplish this mission, based on the Japanese idiom "Sanmu Syugi," Juntendo University accepts anyone regardless of their gender, nationality, or academic background who embodies the university motto "Jin – I exist as you exist" and the principle of "Fudan Zenshin - Continuously Moving Forward." Creating an environment that focuses on how improvements may be made in the future, Juntendo University helps highly motivated individuals who care for others become healthcare professionals patients can believe in, scientists capable of innovative discoveries and inventions, and global citizens ready to serve society. Ever since the establishment of Juntendo University, our medical school has aimed to educate clinicians who are well versed in both the scientific and humanitarian aspects of medicine. We believe that healing the soul with a warm heart is just as important as treating the human body by utilizing modern medical techniques and equipment. Thus, we have always emphasized patient-oriented management in our teaching curriculum and the ability to adjust to time changes, and the will and courage to challenge the unknown. This spirit is also reflected in our medical research programs in the various departments. Research activities at Juntendo are world-renowned for their quality and their contribution to the well-being of society. We believe that our institution is a unique place to conduct medical research for several reasons. First, without a doubt, our university has one of the best medical schools in Japan as well as in the whole of Asia. Conveniently located in Tokyo's heart, patients from all over the country are referred for advanced medical treatments. Thus, conditions rarely encountered elsewhere are frequently found at our university hospital. The huge volume of patients also allows us to accumulate excellent data in our various studies. Secondly, our university receives several research funds. Our university ranks first amongst private medical schools in Japan in research funding from the Japanese Government's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, and Technology (MEXT). We also receive large amounts of research funds from private corporations since our university is private. Unlike public institutions, we are not restricted in the number of funds we may receive from the private sector. Our hospitals are equipped with up-to-date modern medical technology along with brand new hospital wings in the main university hospital in Tokyo and the branch hospitals in Urayasu (Chiba), Koshigaya (Saitama), and Izu-Nagaoka (Shizuoka). Thirdly, our university takes pride in accepting a large number of international researchers.
