Joshibi University of Art and Design is a rarity art and design university for women. The predecessor of Joshibi University of Art and Design, Private Women's School of Fine Arts, published the reasons why higher education was necessary for women: "To empower the self-reliance of women through the arts." Also, about 11,000 cultural assets in the form of dyed fabrics are stored here. The facility is recognized both in Japan and overseas for its research into repairing dyed-fabric cultural assets. Orientation is held when new International students enroll. They are provided with information aimed at making their lives go smoothly. They can also be assisted in applying resident status screening for scholarships, exemptions from tuition, and sponsorship for an apartment rental. Trial exams that determine English-language proficiency are held at extracurricular sessions on campus. Students registered under the "student helper" system as volunteers assist overseas students in their daily lives and offer academic counseling.
