Founded in 1898, Miss Hall's School was one of the first all-girls boarding schools established in New England. Today the School is a nationally recognized boarding and day independent secondary school that combines a unique college-preparatory curriculum with two acclaimed leadership programs, Horizons, and the Girls' Leadership Project. Both programs are central to our belief that, in addition to outstanding academic preparation, girls need additional skills that allow them to step confidently into college and beyond, when they will be expected to communicate effectively and authentically, voice opinions with resolve and respect, and be comfortable having influence, leading change, and contributing boldly and creatively to the common good. In the classroom, girls discuss everything from politics, health care reform, Asian poetry, and electric cars to Greek mythology and the symbolism in Sandra Cisneros's House on Mango Street. They test their theories in Advanced Placement Statistics, explore their curiosities in Graphic Design, and build their resumes in the real-world experiences of our Horizons program. We all recognize the enormous developmental and intellectual shifts that happen between the 9th and 12th grades. At Miss Hall's, there is a more profound metamorphosis taking place, a special kind of "alchemy" (to use a colleague's word). Our innovative, girl-centered program combines academic engagement, leadership training, service-learning, and global connectedness. As generations of alumnae can attest, the result is a transformative education that powerfully changes the trajectory of girls' lives. Being prepared for college is about more than being fluent in two languages and conversant in phases of matter and stoichiometry. A young woman should also be financially literate, savvy about health and wellness, and manage her time and mood. At Miss Hall's School, we do not leave learning these life skills to chance.
