We believe that it is mostly up to our parents to assess and determine when they want to expose their children to specific content as a private school Guiding Light Academy has the flexibility to integrate or exclude information that we do not believe to be in line with the teachings of the Catholic Faith or contribute to the overall development of our students. At Guiding Light Academy, we aim to inspire lifelong learning and develop spiritual awareness by employing the whole child approach to education. Our enriched curriculum program emphasizes a higher level of academics, a stronger spiritual awareness, and a diverse range of co-curricular activities. Teacher observation reviews are also conducted regularly to ensure that all staff is effectively employing the latest teaching methods and continue to meet our highest standards of curriculum delivery. From Grade 3 onwards, GLA focuses on building examination skills for all of our students. During these early years, the children do not face the anxiety of exams that they face in the later years. By teaching our students good study habits early on, we help prepare them for success in this area. Explicitly, we teach them various practical organizational skills, time management skills, and relaxation techniques. We also provide our students with practice exams throughout the early years at GLA to help prepare them for the actual exam-taking at the higher grade levels. By learning all of these valuable skills at an early age, we help to build your child’s self-confidence and problem-solving skills that will assist them throughout their academic life and, in turn, help ease the transition from classroom learning to exam writing. Our unique and personalized approach to learning is specifically designed to exceed the Ontario Ministry of Education Standards. Our workbooks are grade-specific, and the content is regularly updated to ensure it meets the highest academic standards. Our workbooks provide your child with the opportunity to expand on their classroom learning through targeted workbook exercises. The GLA workbooks promote independent learning and aids in the development of your child’s problem-solving skills. During Maths Week, we aim to inspire and motivate our students to learn new math concepts. Maths Week's concept is to help build self-confidence and strengthen problem-solving skills in this vital subject area. Math week provides students with a positive, powerful, and memorable learning experience for our students. Through group activities, our students also learn how to work collaboratively with others to solve complex math equations. During Reading Festival Week, children participate in various engaging and fun activities to help promote literacy learning. By incorporating the use of technology and audio/visual aids, children can recognize the importance of expression when reading and storytelling. Through literacy games, children are provided the opportunity to connect with the stories and stimulate their imaginations, making reading much more enjoyable. Throughout Reading Festival Week, we invite local authors to visit and share their stories and demonstrate a real passion for books and reading. The benefits of our author visits are invaluable and encourage our students to read and use their imagination to create new stories of their own.
