The Governor's Academy, the oldest continuously operating boarding school in the United States, where young men and women in grades 9 through 12 prepare to become tomorrow's civic leaders. More than 400 students from 23 states and 18 countries create a vibrant, fascinating global community. Two-thirds of board and one-third are day students. The Governor's Academy, founded in 1763 on New England farmland, combines centuries of tradition with a dedication to educational innovation. Students flourish in a diverse community distinguished by enduring relationships with teachers and defined by a commitment to learning and a thoughtful balance of academics, athletics, arts, and service to others. Academy graduates are life-long learners who embrace their civic duty and global responsibility. Reflecting on our mission statement's goals, The Governor's Academy ensures academic and co-curricular programs develop skills we believe to be essential for Governor's graduates. The faculty is committed to preparing graduates to be able to: Think critically, and solve problems. Collaborate effectively with other people to achieve common goals. Communicate effectively in written, oral, digital, and graphic formats. Be thoughtful and engaged readers. Access and analyze information. Adapt readily to new situations and information. Understand themselves as members of a broader community and act within a moral and ethical framework. At The Governor's Academy, we welcome individuals who embrace differences. We believe that our personal experiences are the threads that define and connect us. We foster a climate of appreciation in which each person's story can weave itself into our community's evolving fabric. Recognizing that diversity is an ongoing commitment, we purposefully reexamine our behaviors and beliefs to create a community. We expect our students to be lifelong learners and encourage them to challenge themselves and embrace academic life rigors at Governors. To ensure that they succeed, our faculty members are available after class, in the evenings, or on the weekends. We offer study halls and tutorial assistance, our Center for Teaching and Learning is always available, and every student is assigned a full-time advisor. The Governor's Academy provides students with extensive technological resources, including computer-equipped classrooms with ceiling-mounted projectors, live course web pages based on the Veracross platforms, enterprise-class email accessible both locally and remotely, and campus-wide Internet access. The Academy has an outstanding network infrastructure, consisting of a gigabit fiber-optic backbone and 200 Mbps of Internet bandwidth. During the summer of 2013, we completed an expansion of wireless access from academic spaces to all dormitories and public areas. All students also have access to the campus network via Ethernet jacks found in all dorm rooms, the library, all classrooms, and the Student Center. Experiences in the classroom are complemented by extensive student activities, Student Government opportunities, and a balanced Afternoon Program of athletics, the arts, community service, and student publications. Students can take risks in a healthy atmosphere where every club and team welcomes new members. Teachers encourage students to take classes and join activities outside their comfort zone. Everyone supports each other in any endeavor. We are proud to have so many examples of students who have discovered new talents in this safe, accepting environment: top athletes who are passionate about the arts, artists who realize they love biology, math aficionados who tap into their leadership potential.
