      1. The best of both worlds: in its teaching and research, Hochschule Geisenheim University combines the strengths of a traditional research university and a university of applied sciences or Fachhochschule. We offer our students eight practice-oriented bachelor degree programs, each leading to a professional qualification, and nine research-based master degree programs. Our doctoral students complete their PhDs in co-operation with renowned German and foreign universities students and scientists alike benefit from our strong international network of partners. Our research is equally application- and theory-based, focusing on particular crops in viticulture and horticulture and their diverse production and processing areas. We combine this with fresh produce logistics, food safety, business administration, and marketing. Planning and design are two other vital areas encompassing landscape architecture, landscape gardening, and environmental conservation. It is this diversity and international approach that defines the Geisenheim Profile. Our aim, our direction, our values. We want to define a new form of university, bringing our knowledge into public use through the consistent combining of academia and practice, together with lifelong learning. The combination of studying, career, and family is also a significant part of our responsibility as a certified family-friendly university. We have an equal responsibility towards our students, teaching staff, industry, research and development, public communities and administration, political and business decision-makers, and being firmly part of the region. Our university culture is built on personal commitment and open, mutually-respectful communication. Hochschule Geisenheim University was founded on 1st January 2013 as a “New Type” Hochschule, following a concept appraisal by the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat). The new university is a result of the merger between the Geisenheim Research Institute (Forschungsanstalt Geisenheim) and the Geisenheim faculty of the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences (today: Hochschule RheinMain) and has its roots in the “Royal Prussian Institute of Pomology and Viticulture” which was founded in 1872 by Eduard von Lade, a wealthy citizen of Geisenheim.
