Fukuyama City University (FCU) is a brand-new university inaugurated on April 1st, 2011, as the 81st public university in Japan. The primary missions of FCU are to foster qualified professionals in the fields of school education and urban management and to create new knowledge and skills relevant to developing a sustainable community and society. "Learn for the Future; Our Town is Our Campus" is the beacon that our FCU community, students, faculty and administration, share. Fukuyama City University is a four-year coeducational university inaugurated in April 2011 as the 81st public university in Japan. Our university consists of two faculties and two departments: the Department of Childhood Education of the Faculty of Education and the Department of Urban Management of the Faculty of Urban Management. The education system with a small number of students (250 students per academic year) is divided into four quarters. This system provides tiered/focused short-term study, as well as fully enriched personal experience/participation for the fields studied all over the Fukuyama City area, in line with our motto that states, "The city is our campus." All of these features make Fukuyama City University a new type of public university. As a university in our rapidly changing society, our mission is to create human resources capable of supporting the continuous development of society through persistent intellectual, creative endeavors and creating new forms of learning that meet the demands of the era. Three pillars of Fukuyama City University to fulfill our mission are as follows. FCU's first pillar is to foster human resources that can contribute to developing a sustainable society as a public university in Fukuyama. FCU's second pillar is to extend new knowledge to solve society and the community by encouraging practical and interdisciplinary academic research. FCU's third pillar is the contribution to the local community. As an academic center open to the community, we shall assist in cultural development and the local society's development in keeping with the internationalized era. Fukuyama City University implements education and research based on the following philosophy to achieve the mission of our university. In cultivating a wide range of perspectives and a rich sense of humanity, our university shall cultivate human resources capable of identifying and resolving issues to develop a sustainable society in harmony with the environment and others. Our university implements interdisciplinary education and research and aims to extend new "Knowledge" through the fusion of specialty fields to correspond with the myriad of difficult issues in modern society by an individual specialty. Using the strengths of a public university, our university promotes practical education and research linked to local childcare centers, schools, and other institutions to improve the local educational capabilities. By also forging links with industry and administrative organizations, our university takes on the functions of being a "think tank of Fukuyama City," providing lifelong learning and similar opportunities for residents to enrich the regional culture.
Fukuyama Heisei University was established to realize the excellent education in which humanity is highly respected. The character of each student is wholly cultivated to achieve a harmonious personality. The university expects and welcomes young people who can bravely pursue the truth and practice what justice tells us to do, have respect for the preciousness of life and the dignity of other human beings and love their native soils, societies, and nations, and have international outlooks enabling them to love the world dearly. To entrust the hopeful creating of tomorrow to the innocent young people with an aspiration for the future and lay the foundation of a bright future, our university's main aim is to train young people to be able human beings. As a private university with its uniqueness different from other existing universities and a new university widely open to the society, our university should persevere in realizing the university establishment's spirit. Five Teachings of Miyuki: We should pursue the truth and intend to practice what justice tells us to do. We should enrich our character and improve our individuality to be more attractive. We should train ourselves to have indomitable spirits and cultivate human bonds. We should foster the mind and feelings that respect the preciousness of life and pay reverence to Nature. We should always keep honesty and morality in mind and fight for the realization of our dreams. We shall reform today's educational situation in which excessive emphasis on intellectualism and science has caused the formalization of teaching and education has become blighted. We shall realize the proper education, pursuing truth and esteeming justice, fostering human hearts and training ourselves to have firm will, to wholly cultivate every student's character and make them harmonious human beings with rice cultivation. We aim to educate students to be international Japanese with graceful character, an ardent spirit, and a sound mind. A university that is to provide proper education, by definition, should be a place where the truth is regarded as the most precious among students themselves as well as among teachers and students, and all of them are pursuing and trying to realize it. The university should also be a community where the virtue of profound human feelings is valued positively, and realization of the merits mentioned above is done harmoniously. Such an educational community can be materialized only by confidence among teachers and students, and we cannot stop realizing that love must be its foundation. Our university should struggle to realize it fully. What makes it more fruitful to pursue the truth and grope for justice is to aggressively try by themselves practicing what one has found out through their contemplation, especially something new. Our university refuses to give education whose emphasis is only on pursuing basic theory or, contrarily, focused only on gaining professional skills and qualifications.
