- At St.Ethelwold’s Church in Wales Aided Primary School, we provide a safe and nurturing environment where every child is encouraged to reach their full potential. We believe that the happier the child, the more they will learn and therefore strive not only to equip children academically for the next stage of their lives but to equip them with social skills and Christian Values that will allow them to become active and valued members of their local community and wider society. As a Church in Wales School, and with strong links to St Ethelwold’s Church and the vicar, Father Steve Green, we serve the ecclesiastical boundaries of St Ethelwold’s Church, with pupils mainly living in Shotton, Aston, Queensferry, and Connah’s Quay. Our school motto ‘Be The Best You Can’ is something that is at the forefront of our minds in everything that we do. We are very proud of the improvement journey that our school has undertaken and every member of staff at St Ethelwold’s is committed to making further improvements so that every child realizes their full potential. In their latest visit, ESTYN recognized this and in the 2014 Welsh Government ratings of primary schools, we were pleased to be categorized as an effective school with good levels of learner outcomes in key performance indicators. The School’s Governing Body, under the chairmanship of Mr. Rob Dawson, works closely alongside the school and staff to ensure that we deliver good quality education and set out clear aims and policies for the school. St Ethelwold’s VA School was founded in the late 19th Century and occupied a plot on Shotton High Street until moving to our current location in Higher Shotton in 1982. Originally an L-shaped building with 4 classrooms, further extensions were added in 1992 so that the school had a much-needed dining hall and 2 further infant classrooms. In 2014 the school began to admit early entitlement and nursery-aged children for the first time, meaning that a further classroom extension was built and is now being used by our three and four-year-olds.
