      1. Located in a safe and convenient district in the center of Hiroshima, the city of peace, Elisabeth University of Music is fully equipped with many facilities, including a large concert hall with a pipe organ, a small concert hall ideally suited for chamber music, and many rehearsal rooms. One of the distinctive features of Elisabeth University of Music, as the first private music university in Japan to establish a doctorate program, is its comprehensive level of education. Our staff includes internationally renowned performers and very accomplished teachers, most of whom have studied abroad. They are, therefore, more than able to understand the feelings and concerns of our international students. Most international students are of a very high caliber with strong motivation and a keen desire to pursue their studies. Some have won domestic competitions and awards, and many have graduated from our doctoral program. The Elisabeth University of Music is a Catholic school with about 600, 35 full-time and 100 adjunct faculty, offering professional education in music at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The University consists of the Undergraduate Faculty of Music, the Graduate Division, and the University Library. 53 faculty teach in the Graduate Division, where enrollment is limited to about 80. All programs, both undergraduate and graduate, are co-educational. The Elisabeth University of Music traces its roots back to the Hiroshima Evening Music School, a small Quonset hut built in September 1947 on the ruins of a town still bleeding from the wounds of the atomic holocaust. Thus, through devoted guidance and research in the musical arts theory and practice, it aims to impart broad knowledge and form musicians of good sense. This University was established and rooted in the spirit of Catholicism, which serves as its guiding principle. This University, faithful to the Society of Jesus' educational policy, gives great importance to general education and foreign languages. The educational cornerstone of this University is its close bond with each student in a familial atmosphere, based on the conviction that all people are brothers and sisters of one another. A significant characteristic of this University, not seen elsewhere, is guidance and research in Gregorian chant, polyphony, contemporary religious music, and the other usual musical genres. This University enjoys friendly international relations and has as its ultimate mission the fusion of traditional Japanese culture and Western civilization. This University's ultimate educational ideal is to arrive at a mystical contemplation spirit through the musical arts.
