A warm welcome to the Detmold University of Music. The musical spectrum at our University and throughout Detmold is rich and varied. 'There is much music-making here,' wrote Johannes Brahms as long ago as 1858 from Detmold's then royal seat. His comment holds to the present day. The foundations are excellent: our university buildings are superbly equipped and are situated within charming park grounds. Our students have the option to practice round the clock. The University has been offering artistic training on the highest level for over 70 years and is also involved in pioneering technologies, such as digital editions. Members of the University enjoy a positive day-to-day interaction in an informal environment. Our mission statement, ratified in 2015, articulates an avowal in which music as a 'social art form' makes an indispensable contribution to society through artistic, educational, and scholarly excellence. The University unites artistic, pedagogical, and academic expertise. As members and associates of the University, we unite our musical and cultural heritage with innovative action. We see music as an indispensable part of society and rise to the challenges arising from cultural diversity and fundamental social change. We make our contribution to this through education and the power of artistic, musical creativity. Education, support, and personal development are at the center of learning and teaching. The University offers its students qualifications of the highest level. The courses on offer aim to provide comprehensive musical education, strong professional competence, and practical relevance. They serve to foster a judicious sense of responsibility in the students and refine and strengthen their whole personalities. This should enable them to find a life path appropriate to their musical affinities and skills. We see ourselves as a cooperative university whose activities resonate into national and international cultural life and a significant promoter of the arts, impacting the city and surrounding region. Our campus university is characterized by a friendly and open-minded atmosphere in a green and leafy setting. We react creatively to change and developments in cultural life, adjusting our training profile as necessary. At the University, we attach great importance to the participation of different groups in the opinion-forming and transparent decision-making processes. Those in positions of responsibility and leadership take great care to ensure that university life is marked by healthy working conditions and a trusting spirit of cooperation. Through mutual recognition of our skills and reciprocal appreciation, we create an atmosphere in which authenticity, creativity, and diversity all have their place. Openness, willingness to help, and tolerance on all levels and between all groups form the natural foundations. Since 1946, Detmold University of Music has enjoyed an excellent reputation both nationally and internationally. With its exceptionally well-equipped premises set around the listed Palais Garden, the campus, a library center in line with modern standards, and other institutes offer the best possible undisturbed study conditions. The students are trained for careers in orchestras, the concert and opera stage, and the conducting podium. In addition to this, courses of study in music pedagogy and church music augment our profile, along with music outreach and the internationally accredited Erich Thienhaus Institute, which is primarily concerned with music production's artistic aspects. In numerous venues on and off-campus, the University has named itself a regional arts promoter, laying on more than 400 concerts per year. The principal venue is the Konzerthaus, which has an outstanding acoustic with its 600 seats and unique wave field synthesis. Detmold is fundamentally shaping the landscape for music universities with its developments in music production and music outreach. Students training as sound engineers at the internationally accredited Erich Thienhaus Institute works closely with practical artistic disciplines at the University. The Music Outreach/Music Management postgraduate course responds to changes in classical music's perception and to the concert scene itself. Along with Berlin University of the Arts, Detmold University of Music is one of only two universities in Germany with professorships in string chamber music, the post being held by the renowned Auryn Quartet. Aside from its artistic training, Detmold University of Music is also active in the field of research. Since April 2012, Detmold has been the locus for quality management and educational development at the German University of the music landscape. The offices of the Netzwerk Musikhochschulen (University of Music Network) are domiciled here, of which 11 of Germany's 24 universities of music are members. The in-house music creche offers students of elementary music education a suitable workplace while creating a further childcare option for children of families associated with the University. Since 2015, the University has been one of five equal partner institutions of the FORUM Wissenschaft | Bibliothek | Musik (FORUM Scholarship, Library, Music). The pooling of music library holdings with the Lippe State Library is of great value to a broad demographic, thereby benefiting the community as a whole. View full university
