  1. Founded in 1850, Christ’s College is an independent Anglican school for boys from Year 9 to Year 13. The college has a culture of excellence in all aspects of education. We support and inspire our students to always aim high and achieve their best. Boys with a wide range of abilities are welcome at College. There is a consistent emphasis on ambition and achievement at all levels and our student outcomes are amongst the best in New Zealand. We nurture the ambitions of some of the brightest scholars in the land, whilst taking equal pleasure in the outstanding progress made by those who benefit from our Learning Centre. The boys respect each other’s commitment, whether within or outside the classroom. Our diversity is a key to our success. We know there are many different reasons why some boys experience difficulty with learning and require extra help. The Learning Centre provides a safe learning environment where, using a personalized learning program, every boy who needs support is allowed to achieve at his best. Christ's College achieves leading academic results when compared with schools across New Zealand. Our tailored programs enable us to offer enrichment programs for identified students. Enrichment opportunities are led by specialist teachers and include creative writing courses, access to university presentations, linguistics, Brain Bee, classical literature, robotics, and programming. We provide extra teaching assistance for academic scholarship programs, and each department ensures extension opportunities are available. Academic mentoring supports the boys to achieve their goals. The college will provide the software required to support learning. This includes the Adobe suite for all boys. We provide Sibelius software for senior music students. Other commercial software, which College has student licenses for, will be provided on a needs basis depending on the course. Installation of licensed software requires additional software to be installed on student laptops, which allows College to manage its licensing requirements. College makes extensive use of the Google suite of applications, which are accessed online. These are free, and the files automatically save and can be accessed from any computer. They can also be easily shared with teachers. This means that if for some reason, your son’s computer is out of action, he can access his files from another computer or laptop. Keeping software up-to-date will be the boys’ responsibility. The college has a filtered and managed internet connection and we block all objectionable material. College also runs a series of digital citizenship courses for boys and parents. These courses are aimed at not only developing good digital learning skills (Digital Literacy) but also cover the safe use of the internet and social media. Parent courses provide information on how you can support the appropriate use of technology at home. Sites such as OpenDNS provide tools for parents to manage access at home if needed. Apple’s OS also has built-in management tools. It is important, however, that these tools do not interfere with the boy's need to load educational software and use their laptops at College. Provide a world-class environment that develops a lifelong passion for all sports and physical activities. Many of our boys excel in more than one area of sport, and that is because of the opportunities provided by inter-house activities and through encouraging them to move outside their comfort zones, to be the best they can be. Christ’s College is well known across New Zealand for its competitiveness in a broad range of sports, from traditional team sports to more recreation-based activities. Staff work alongside professional coaches to assist teams and individuals. The House system encourages participation in a wide range of sporting activities which lead boys into new experiences. Boys are encouraged to enjoy sporting competitions without compromising the highest standards of sportsmanship and fair play. For many students sport is one path to personal satisfaction, understanding the value of endeavor, self-discipline, and other essential features of moral development. At Christ's College, sport is kept in balance with scholastic and other co-curricular activities but is considered to be a part of school life in which many boys can excel. Sport is compulsory in both summer and winter for Year 9 - 13 students. The college has exchange programs in place with Bishops School in Cape Town and Michaelhouse in Natal, South Africa Christ Church Grammar School in Perth and Knox Grammar School in Sydney, Australia, and the Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, USA. Students should contact their Housemaster for details. We are the only South Island member of Round Square, an international network of over 160 schools in 40 countries, and have established exchange programs with other Round Square affiliated schools
  2. Christ’s Hospital (CH) is one of the famous Royal Hospitals of London, whose foundation marked the beginning of the social services in Tudor England. Inspired by a sermon by Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London, the young King Edward VI instructed the Lord Mayor, Sir Richard Dobbs, to appoint a committee of leading citizens to consider remedies and relief for the City’s homeless poor. Their work, and subsequently their philanthropy, led to the founding of the five great Hospitals all supporting different needs. CH, established in the monastery of the Grey Friars in Newgate Street, embraced the task of educating and nourishing the destitute children of the City and took children of all social backgrounds and ages. Our mission has been to pioneer social mobility and challenged social inequality to provide an unrivaled start in life for disadvantaged children for nearly five centuries. As economic and social inequality continue to grow in the UK, Christ’s Hospital’s mission is ever more relevant. By providing first-class, free or supported education to talented young people from disadvantaged and modest backgrounds, our mission helps Christ’s Hospital pupils to reach their full potential and transforms lives in a way that no other educational establishment in the UK can match. It is and shall be our mission to: To offer to boys and girls of suitable age education of such breadth and excellence as will fit them pre-eminently for work and service in society in their generation and in particular to enable them to compete competently with their peers for opportunities in further education and careers. In doing so To develop first the skills, learning habits, independence of mind, and spiritual awareness that will enable and motivate them to continue to educate themselves throughout their lives and second, a high sense of responsibility towards themselves, their families, their associates, and to society at large, such as to form a permanent foundation of their training and character In the choice of pupils, to have regard especially to children of families in social, financial or other specific need To provide our pupils with opportunities to explore, reflect upon, and grow in their understanding of, the Christian faith and To maintain and further the close connection with the City of London so successfully nurtured since 1552. The principal object of the charity is the advancement of education of children, principally for the benefit of those whose families are in social, financial, or other specific need. The assets and endowments of Christ’s Hospital are managed to ensure that this prime purpose is maintained for the benefit of both present and future generations. Christ’s Hospital is privileged to enjoy the patronage of Her Majesty The Queen. The generosity of our benefactors has built up a valuable Endowment over the centuries. However, Christ’s Hospital’s commitment to providing more bursary support than any other independent boarding school in the country exceeds the annual income from its endowment assets. Philanthropy, therefore, remains central for Christ’s Hospital to continue to transform lives for future generations. In November 1552, CH opened its doors to 380 pupils and, within a year, the number had increased to over 500. Many children, including 100 of the first 380, were infants who were sent away to CH Hertford to be looked after. When they reached 10 they returned to CH London. Find out more about our unique history and quirky traditions by visiting our timeline page. Christ’s Hospital is an independent co-educational boarding and day school of 900 pupils with an equal mix of boys and girls aged 11-18. The School is located in West Sussex in the southeast of England. It is situated in stunning countryside between London and Brighton, 20 miles south of London Gatwick and 38 miles from London Heathrow. The School is fortunate in having its mainline railway station with regular trains to London, Gatwick Airport, and the South Coast. Christ’s Hospital is unique for a UK independent boarding school in that it offers more bursary places than other schools. This stems from our founding charter as a charitable school. School fees are paid on a means-tested basis, with substantial subsidies paid by the School, so that pupils from all corners of society can have a high-quality, independent boarding school education that would otherwise be beyond their means. “Whilst other school fee assistance schemes have come and gone, Christ’s Hospital has stuck to its charitable aims since it was founded in 1552: educating the financially, socially and otherwise needy for free, or at a reduced rate, in a caring boarding environment. Today these pupils sit happily alongside the full fee payers and the School’s pupil profile is one of which its royal founder, Edward VI, would have been proud.” Kate, former parent Christ’s Hospital is committed to providing a first-class education to talented boys and girls from a broad social and financial background by offering eligible parents/guardians means-tested financial support with the payment of school fees. Such support is known as a bursary and may be awarded in the form of a discount of up to 100% on fees payable. 13% of pupils receive a fully supported place 73% of pupils receive some level of bursary support 24% pay full fees The total annual bursary (fee assisted) support given by Christ’s Hospital is over £18.2 m Christ’s Hospital’s name derives from being founded in the parish of Christchurch, London. During the Middle Ages, hospitals served different functions from modern institutions. Medieval hospitals were almshouses for the poor, hostels for pilgrims, or hospital schools. The word “hospital” derives from the Latin noun hospitium and came to signify hospitality. Celebrating the signing of the Royal Charter by Edward VI in 1553 One hundred years after the founding of Christ’s Hospital and the signing of the Royal Charter by Edward VI in 1553, a painting was commissioned to celebrate this historic event. With a history as long and rich as ours, it is not surprising that there are many famous alumni (known as Old Blues). From the 19th and early 20th Centuries, writers and poets including Charles Lamb, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Edmund Blunden. From the world of music, conductors Sir William Glock, Sir Colin Davis, and Charles Hazlewood. From academia, we are proud to have educated recent principals of Oxbridge colleges – Elizabeth Llewellyn-Smith (St Hilda’s), Ruth Deech (St Anne’s), and Alan Ryan (Warden of New College, Oxford). Journalists Bernard Levin and Con Coughlin trade unionist John Edmonds aviation engineer Barnes Wallis senior members of the military including General Sir Garry Johnson and from the world of politics Michael Stewart (former Foreign Secretary). Several Old Blues have gone on to make a career in sport, most notably former Sussex and England bowler John Snow and of course the current England rugby player Joe Launchbury and more recently cricketer Stuart Whittingham. Theatrical Old Blues include Olivier Award winners Howard Davies (stage director), Roger Allam (actor), and Michael Wilding (actor). Film actors and directors such as Jason Flemyng, Susannah Fielding, and Peter Hewitt, screenwriters for television including Clive Exton, and comedians who include Mark Thomas and Holly Walsh have all benefitted from a Christ’s Hospital education. Christ’s Hospital is widely known in the UK for its outstanding education principle and its diverse breadth of pupils. It is the mission of Christ’s Hospital to continue to enable those from all corners of society to come together and thrive regardless of their background. A Christ’s Hospital pupil’s experience centers on building and strengthening attributes based on resilience, perseverance, compassion, willing service, and empathy. These attributes form the pillar-strength principles of the Christ’s Hospital curriculum. Pupils will feel what it is like to be challenged and, having been challenged, will themselves challenge intelligently, and that spirit is quickly realized from the moment the pupils first enter Christ’s Hospital. ‘To challenge’ is understood to be part of a creative, productive, and transformative process, which helps equip pupils to shape positively the societies they belong to long after they have left. The journey our pupils make from the time they arrive to when they leave is often profoundly rewarding, and along the way, we support their growing resilience and success as they move on to university and beyond. We delight in their achievements and welcome them back to inspire and encourage current pupils.
  3. Choosing the right secondary school for your daughter or son is a vitally important decision. We recognize the crucial role played by you as parents in the education of your children. You want them to be happy and successful so you need to feel confident that we will provide the environment where this will happen. Christ’s School welcomes applications from all members of the community. We aim to create an inclusive, caring, and supportive community where all pupils learn and flourish. For the academic year beginning September 2019, we will have 150 places available in Years 7 to 11. Entry into Year 7 can be via a Foundation place (50 places), which requires church attendance, or via an Open place (100 places). All applications for Year 7 places at Christ's School must be made via the admissions website. Also, if you are applying for a Foundation place, you will need to complete a Foundation Supplementary Information Form and get your minister to complete a Ministerial Reference Form. Both of these need to be returned to Karen Hindle at Christ's School. The Sixth Form at Christ’s School is a place where students are valued and respected as young adults, where excellence and individuality thrive and where high academic standards, combined with wide-ranging enrichment opportunities, ensure that students fulfill their potential. Our Sixth Form offers a diverse range of subjects. Places are open to everyone who meets the academic entry requirements, where the school offers suitable courses. Christ's Church of England School has a distinctive Christian ethos founded on the values of love, justice, and peace, and they underpin everything we do. We welcome applications from all members of the community and we ask all parents to respect the Christian ethos of the school and its importance to our community. Christ's School curriculum is designed to cover a wide range of subjects and to encourage independent learning. The curriculum is broad and balanced to enable every student to develop their academic strengths and personal talents. Students are encouraged to choose subjects giving a broad depth of curriculum. Full details of our curriculum policy can be found in the Curriculum Statement. The increasing pressure on students to make specific levels of progress and achieve particular grades at GCSE can leave both students, parents, and teachers feeling overwhelmed. Alongside the existing pressures, there are now additional SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar) requirements and marks in every GCSE exam. Literacy is a national Government priority and also a priority for Christ’s School. The link between home and school is vital for you/ your child to succeed, whether this is through pastoral or academic support. Good literacy skills are linked to both happiness and achievement. Christ's School is over-subscribed in the heart of Richmond, with origins dating back to 1658, where our community is founded on the Christian values of love, justice, and peace, and they underpin everything that we do. We are committed to the pursuit of excellence in all that we do and if you entrust your child to us you will see that we work tirelessly to achieve this. As a Church of England school, our mission is to be one where each individual is valued and respected. We will aim to meet the needs of all our learners by offering them every opportunity to learn and develop to fulfill their potential. We will celebrate our skills, talents, and successes within a community founded upon our Christian values of Love, Justice, and Peace. Our core purpose is to provide all members of our community with the skills necessary to become outstanding learners both whilst they remain at our school and also throughout their lives. We encourage everyone to develop independent learning skills and to support each other in achieving this important goal. We recognize and celebrate success wherever we can. We believe that we all have talent and that it is our responsibility to identify, nurture and develop that talent to the best of our abilities with the help, guidance, and support of others. The Governing Body is a team of committed and enthusiastic volunteers, representing all corners of our school community including parents, staff, and local churches. We work closely with the Headteacher and senior staff in the school to set strategic direction and ensure strong accountability is in place for everything that happens at Christ’s.In short, we are often described as ‘critical friends’ of the school challenging and giving constructive criticism, but always from the perspective of strong support and absolute commitment to the goals of the school. Since September 2012 there is a general requirement for schools to publish details of their pupil premium grant allocation, how it is spent and the impact it has on attainment. The Department for Education website makes it clear that the government believes that this grant, which is in addition to the main school funding, is the best way to address the current inequalities between children who are eligible for free school meals, or who have been at some time in the last six years, and their wealthier peers. The pupil premium funding is therefore targeted at the pupils who need it the most and whilst schools are free to spend the grant as they see fit, they are accountable for the use of this additional funding in support of students from low-income families.
  4. Christ’s College Finchley is a school where high standards of attainment and behavior are expected where each matter and where everyone has something special to contribute. We believe that all students can achieve their best and become confident, responsible adults, ready and equipped for an everchanging world. Our students are encouraged to explore their talents and passions, nurtured to exceed all expectations, and fully prepared to realize their potential. We pursue academic excellence for all students, resolute in the belief that every student has great potential and should be allowed to fulfill it. The school combines the best aspects of conventional learning with skilled innovation and creativity to provide a rich environment for students to progress. Our outstanding teachers and their dynamic approach to delivering a traditional education through a contemporary curriculum and modern teaching methods allow us to nurture each student’s talent and develop skills and expertise outside of the classroom. I am determined that every student will be able to reflect on their time at Christ’s College as happy and fulfilling and having provided the foundations needed for their long-term future success. Christ’s College is an organization that makes people feel good about themselves. This is evidenced by particularly high staff retention rates over many decades and the return of the vast majority of Year 11 students eligible for our sixth form provision. Visitors consistently comment on the friendly and happy atmosphere at the school. Prospective teachers often remark that they feel ‘at at home’ within minutes of their arrival and are keen to secure a permanent post in the school. I have utilized these qualities to make some truly outstanding additions to our staffing. These appointments bolster our fantastic team of staff who are passionate about education, care about young people, and believe in their futures. Our teachers are integral in the pursuit of our objectives: dedicated to developing and implementing the best possible teaching practices, so they can maximize every student’s progress whilst making learning engaging and exciting. We work diligently to ensure students are inspired by all of their subjects by creating a learning environment that encourages discovery and collaboration. By providing students with enriching educational experiences, we aim to help them mature intellectually, physically, and emotionally. A balanced curriculum encourages students to develop resilience, think creatively and independently, foster passions, and be empathetic and compassionate toward others. The school and staff are committed to ensuring that your child will be more successful in their education and development at Christ’s College, than anywhere else. Students are conscientious, caring, polite, and kind all of which are attributes the school continually strives to foster. These behaviors stem from their excellent relationships with staff throughout the school and result in a calm and purposeful atmosphere, both in and out of lessons. We use this precious commodity as the foundation for obtaining the academic success we relentlessly pursue. We pride ourselves on treating each young person as an individual and students benefit from tailored levels of support dependent on their needs all aspects of their school life are scrutinized to ensure they achieve their potential. Prefects and Sixth Formers play an important role as peer listeners and our Student Welfare team ensures that any concerns are dealt with immediately. From those who are the ablest to those who require additional support, we ensure that everyone is stretched and challenged. We believe that this approach is what enables our students to secure places at top universities and enjoy successful careers.

7. View full school
