The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is a national model for metropolitan universities. In collaboration with our many regional partners, we offer our students an experiential learning environment graced with outstanding teaching scholars in bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. Through research, outreach, and artistic pursuits, our faculty members remain on the cutting edge in their disciplines—and they take UTC students with them. Undergraduate students at UTC gain research experience that is reserved for graduate students at most other campuses. With the increasing emphasis on master's and doctoral programs, advanced research opportunities are developing across areas. Partnerships with governments, agencies, and industries across the region are accelerating the growth of research potential. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is equipped with high-tech learning and research facilities and graced with teaching scholars' faculty—not teaching assistants. Through internships, cooperative education assignments, and other experiential learning opportunities, our students learn in a laboratory as large as our world. As a department within the Division for Student Development, UTC Campus Recreation provides holistic experiences that educate and empower members of the university community and Chattanooga community. By offering a wide variety of recreational opportunities, UTC Campus Recreation seeks to enhance the experiences of those we serve by promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. Campus Recreation will provide experiences for students, staff, faculty, guests, and community members to engage in programming in aquatics, fitness, intramural and club sports, informal recreation, special events, cheer and dance, and outdoor adventures. There are many chances and opportunities to get involved on UTC's campus. The Division of Student Development offers many programs, activities, leadership opportunities, and access to different organizations to get involved while on campus. Whether it is helping you in a time of need, providing you social engagement, or finding ways to complement your academic pursuits, the offices and departments within the division are here to help you make the most of your experience. The Division of Student Development fosters experiential and personal development opportunities that engage and empower students in becoming life-long learners and responsible global citizens. The University Center, or UC, is the UTC campus's central hub, containing offices, dining facilities, the campus bookstore, and meeting spaces for campus departments and student organizations. With nearly 200,000 square feet of space, the UC is active both day and night with campus comings and goings. We hope you will stop by and visit our facility the next time you are on campus. Interested in making a difference at UTC? We would love for you to join the Graduate Student Association as a GSA representative. GSA officers and representatives meet approximately once a month to ensure that all degree programs have a voice. We are looking for graduate students from all disciplines and would love for you to join us! This would be an excellent opportunity to develop leadership, networking, decision making, and teamwork skills. Our city's renaissance has received international attention, and we're just getting started. The University is located only a few blocks from Chattanooga's urban area, a city that is both highly industrial and rich in natural beauty. Claiming more than 600 industries, Chattanooga lies at Lookout and Signal Mountains, where the Tennessee River forms Moccasin Bend. These sites possess historical significance and beauty in a city steeped in the heritage of the Civil War. Chattanooga's cultural environment is enhanced by contributions from the University and the many civic organizations that support the arts through dramatic productions, concerts, and art exhibits. Ten city parks, seven public golf courses, and a 35,400-acre lake provide a variety of recreational activities. When the Methodist Episcopal Church began to explore the possibilities of developing a central university in the South, Chattanoogans came forward to work with the church in this effort. Since its founding as Chattanooga University in 1886, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has developed institutional excellence, which rests on an unusual blend of American education's private and public traditions. For 83 years, the University was a private school. Three years after its founding, the University was consolidated with another church-related school, East Tennessee Wesleyan University, at Athens, under the name of Grant University. In 1907 the name University of Chattanooga was adopted. In 1969 the University of Chattanooga and a junior college, Chattanooga City College, merged with the University of Tennessee, one of the oldest land-grant universities in the nation, to form the UTC campus. Pledged to the entire state's service, the University of Tennessee has emerged as a statewide system consisting of four primary campuses. The new campus was given the mandate to devote a significant portion of its resources to the development of excellence in undergraduate education and selected graduate study areas.
