  1. From offering evening classes to the local community and teaching soldiers skills to help them find employment after the First World War, Bucks has been many things to many people. We recently celebrated our 125th anniversary and looked back on some remarkable achievements from over the years. We may be proud of our heritage, but we are excited about the future too. We are working towards a vision to create an environment where innovation, creativity, and enterprise flourish. We have already developed a partnership to inspire students in emerging technology and have plans to make a real difference in people’s lives. The origins of our University stretch back to 1891. Right from the start, we specialized in vocational learning, and over the years, we have gone from strength to strength. We have been transforming lives for more than 125 years. Please take a look at our digital timeline to see some critical events along the way. We want to make sure all our graduates have the skills and experiences to succeed in today’s demanding and competitive world. That is why we have invested more than £100 million in our facilities across our three campuses. We have got some exciting plans to make Bucks an even more inspiring place to study. Our vision focuses on our education, our research, and our people. Moreover, of course, our students will be at the heart of everything we do. Bucks New University was initially founded in 1891 as the School of Science and Art. Back then, the School offered evening classes to people in the local area – and was initially funded with a tax on beer and spirits! In the 20th century, the School started to develop strong links with local crafts like furniture making and cabinetry. It was the beginning of our long association with furniture design and manufacture. After the Second World War, the School expanded and became known as the High Wycombe College of Art and Technology. High Wycombe became a center for the furniture-making industry, and estimates say that around 80% of all the nation’s wooden chairs were made in the town during the 1960s. In 1999 we were awarded University College status by the government and became known as Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College. It was not until 2007 that we changed that to the snappier name of Buckinghamshire New University. Bucks New University aspires to be a leading UK University in applied, practice-based and translational research and related advanced scholarship in our fields of professional, creative, and translational practice. Our Applied Research and Enterprise work: shapes practice informs policy supports innovation underpins our curriculum catalyzes entrepreneurship enhances economic growth enriches society Our research activities range across several themes, with activities conducted at local, national, and international levels. Bucks has an established track record supporting the development of innovative international educational programs through Erasmus + projects. Bucks offers postgraduate research degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Our research degrees are awarded by Staffordshire University, with research students formally enrolled at Bucks as the institution responsible for supervision and support. Our researchers and research students are supported through a variety of researcher development events. Bucks New University will be one of the first institutions to offer the Professional Academic Apprenticeship for researchers. View full university
