  1. Brentwood School opened in the fall of 1972 as a co-educational, college preparatory day school with grades 6-10. Grade 11 was added in fall 1973, and the School graduated its first senior class in June 1975. As you peruse the site, please keep in mind our motto: "Start curious. Stay curious. Go anywhere." These six words drive Brentwood. From the School's outstanding faculty that fuels the fire of curiosity in our students, to the daily athletic and artistic risk-taking and accomplishments that occur on our playing fields, in our studios, and on our stages, to a service-learning program that inspires deeper understanding and appreciation of the greater Los Angeles and global communities, Brentwood provides a myriad of opportunities to engage its students. This level of engagement fosters the inspiration and intellectual passion we witness in our students daily. With your first steps on campus, you will feel the sense of community and pride that is Brentwood School. Brentwood students are devoted to their School, as are their parents and guardians, who give their time and resources generously. We are a school that is small enough to build upon individual and collective curiosity and simultaneously large enough to have breadth and depth of opportunity for all our students. Brentwood School does not discriminate based on race, color, disability, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or national or ethnic origin or ancestry in administering its education or admissions policies or its financial aid, athletics, or other programs. The Brentwood Student Diversity Council comprises student leaders from each affinity group on campus that represent diverse identities of the student body. Our goals include but are not limited to creating a dialogue between the school administration and students, raising awareness about the experiences of underrepresented groups, and providing support to everyone on campus. We work to ensure that students can voice their concerns and constructive criticisms in a safe, respectful, and open environment. The Council fosters communication between the various represented groups. We uphold the Brentwood Diversity Mission Statement and work to ensure that it is implemented in its fullest form. Brentwood is intent, purposeful, and strategic about being a school that honors people in all their differences. This is reflected in Diversity as a core value, but a separate Diversity Mission Statement has been crafted to emphasize this important commitment by the School. My role is to ensure that equity and inclusion is a component of everything we do. Equity is being conscious and cognitive of our efforts best to meet all community members' needs. Inclusion is creating an environment where all participants and constituents can be their best selves, irrespective of background, experience, and lifestyle. We do this with a variety of measures, policies, and programs. We do this through our curriculum in what we teach and how we teach it. We are both motivated and inspired to be members of a vibrant community that recognizes that Diversity is advantageous now and in the future. We work together as students, parents, faculty, and administration to maintain an inclusive community. We are passionate about what we, as a community, can do together. Children are encouraged to be curious and creative while developing confidence in their abilities. The curriculum is traditional, emphasizing reading, writing, and math, yet the teaching and learning process is child-centered. Written and designed by the faculty, our program is unique to Brentwood School. Grades study various themes integrated with social studies, science, and other "special" subjects. Necessary skills are taught, and the thematic approach encourages students to retain their enthusiasm and love for learning simultaneously as they are learning the basic building blocks of school work. Teachers work together to build explicit links between subjects to deepen students' understanding of the world they live in and enable students to consider higher-level thinking. We hope to engender wonder and a belief in every student that s/he is a powerful learner. Finally, our goal is to inspire enthusiasm for learning and to nourish each student's intellectual and emotional development in a supportive and diverse community grounded in Brentwood School's core values of trust, respect, responsibility, honesty, caring community, and Diversity. Our program and strong partnership between students, parents, and faculty will empower our middle schoolers to become well-rounded, lifelong learners who can see through multiple lenses to understand and improve their world. Of paramount importance in our students' lives is helping them to find balance. We encourage students to continue to pursue their athletic interests and artistic passions and to engage in the life of the School. As a small community, we cannot absorb many "specialists" our athletes are artists, our singers are poets, our thespians are skilled debaters, and our dancers are student leaders. Not only are our students' tastes diverse, but their accomplishments are lauded and supported by their peers and faculty. 2. Brentwood is a co-educational boarding school for Grades 9 to 12. Prospective students are drawn to our school's innovative approach, university preparatory programs, and a spectacular oceanfront setting. Since 1923, we have worked diligently to establish a transformation place of learning and leadership, mirroring the educational experience of a small college rather than a traditional boarding school. Our primary purpose is to help students gain the independence and skills necessary to succeed in the post-secondary world while studying in a safe, caring, and nurturing environment. Today, Brentwood stands as a model of progressive, West Coast boarding. Our school is a remarkable place to make lifelong friends while gaining a world-class education. We welcome visitors and invite you to share in the Brentwood experience. Brentwood has a long tradition of seeking new and innovative ways to enhance learning for each student. A unique physical location, our tripartite program, and a culture of inclusion and support create a singular place of learning. Our school's underlying foundation can be found in our Boarding Life Initiative, which draws all members of this community together. Our students have found that the Brentwood formula results in unparalleled opportunities for educational discipline and experimentation. We are proud that Brentwood is a dynamic and progressive place of learning, where student choice is at the forefront the school's culture is based on the fundamental concept of students choosing to attend Brentwood. Our admissions team will ask students a simple question, "Is it your choice to attend Brentwood?" This philosophy of choice creates a warm, friendly, and passionate community of learners and leaders that encompass the Brentwood Family – students, staff, parents, and alum. As a contemporary school with a unique approach to balancing academics, arts, and athletics, we offer a West Coast university prep atmosphere within a nurturing environment. As a boarding school, learning opportunities are not limited to school hours but continue throughout the day – on our fields, in our art studios, on our stages, and in our houses. We believe that this deep, enriched learning experience leads to a transformative experience. Brentwood's university and college counseling team has established an international reputation through developing strong relationships with post-secondary admissions departments, parents, students, and Brentwood graduates. Through self-evaluation, research, university visits, and extensive counseling, students learn to make informed decisions about the schools and programs which most suit their aptitudes and aspirations. At Brentwood, we seek the right fit for both the student and our school. We only accept students who choose to be here. No one is sent to our school. We seek students who value opportunity, embrace challenges, and enrich our vibrant, friendly boarding school community. We find the students best suited to Brentwood's course of studies to succeed in a tripartite university-preparatory program. This means that admission is not solely based on an applicant's academic potential, but also on character and eagerness to participate actively in our arts and athletic programs. We care about what students accomplish in and out of the classroom. Application to Brentwood is always competitive, and we encourage families to start the application process as early as possible. 5. Welcome to Brentwood School. We are one of the UK’s leading independent schools for boys and girls aged 3 to 18 with a history spanning almost 500 years. Our values are at the center of everything we do. Although the words from our school motto – ‘Virtue, Learning, Manners’ – were written in 1622, they are remarkably timeless. They guide our core purpose in helping young people discover and develop their talents with both self-assurance and humility. Our pupils are kind, ambitious, and seek to make a positive contribution in the present and the future: our role is to help them achieve their successes – in whatever shape they may come – without any sense of entitlement. To do this, we need to prepare our pupils for a fast-paced and ever-changing world. They will need to solve problems we don’t yet know about (in addition to those we do) and many will take on jobs that don’t yet exist. Our pupils are active participants in this journey and distinguish themselves as enterprising young people who always strive to be the best version of themselves. They excel in many areas – academically, in the visual and performing arts, and sports. In an age of instant gratification and immediate rewards, our pupils understand the value of perseverance, learning from mistakes, and the fact that patience is a virtue. They are willing to take managed risks and celebrate their successes and those of their peers with equal enthusiasm, whilst accepting Winston Churchill’s premise that ‘success is not final and failure is not fatal. We cultivate this approach by modeling the behaviors we want to help our pupils develop, and by teaching with genuine passion and intelligence in a stimulating environment. The consequences of this culture of continuous learning are our excellent record of exam results and onward success of our pupils, but we are a School that offers much more than such measurable and finite outcomes: many schools promise to develop the whole person but few can claim to do so as well as Brentwood. We are also a day and boarding school with a difference – our boys and girls are taught separately until the Sixth Form and this allows us to encourage freedom of expression and create space for individual identity within the classroom whilst maintaining and developing social integration beyond it. All our pupils enjoy access to our modern facilities, set in the heart of Brentwood yet surrounded by 75 acres of playing fields and gardens. In 1557 Sir Antony Browne, the Lord Chief Justice, acquired the land on which Brentwood School was first built. During Mary Tudor's reign, hundreds of Protestants were burned at the stake and a well-known Brentwood Protestant, William Hunter, was ordered by Sir Antony Browne to be executed. This act may have led Sir Antony Browne to found Brentwood School. The facilities at Brentwood School are of the highest quality across academic, arts, and sports areas for all ages from 3 – 18 years. Set within a 75-acre site, in the heart of Brentwood town, and a direct train ride from London Stratford station, our campus provides a stimulating environment for innovative teaching and a first-class education. We are continually improving and developing the School site to support our innovative approach to learning. Being mindful of our great heritage, we blend the traditional with the modern, helping to keep our campus in shape for the next generation. These iconic developments are indeed impressive, but what is more important is the impact they have on pupils’ learning. At the heart of our development plans is the desire to enrich the everyday learning experience of our students, to raise their aspirations, and to support a multi-faceted curriculum both inside and outside the classroom.
