Bethune-Cookman University seeks to define a new standard for academic excellence to become the best small College in the southern region. In support of the Student Affairs Division's mission Student, Health Services will promote overall student health by providing quality health services and health education to foster a healthy campus community. Student Health Services provides preventative health care and routine medical care, such as physical exams, treatment of common problems (colds, gastrointestinal problems, skin irritations due to allergic reactions and infections) accidents, and sports-related injuries such as sprains and fractures and lacerations, as well as chronic illnesses such as asthma or diabetes. Referrals will be made to local community partners for specialty services. The Center for Information Technology (CIT) supports Bethune-Cookman University students, faculty, and staff in using computer technology and the Internet for instruction, research, and administrative services. CIT comprises five divisions: Academic Computing, Administrative Computing, Client Services, Network Support & Telecommunications, and Web Services. Particular focus will be placed on assessing, selecting, and providing computing, networking, and telecommunications equipment and facilities to the University community. The Center for Information Technology (CIT) is committed to maintaining high-security standards for private/non-public university data, which the University is obliged to treat as confidential. In today's environment of increasing risks to private data, where no network is or can be 100% secure, the CIT staff are committed to protecting private data from reasonably foreseeable risks through compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to data privacy while pursuing appropriate actions required to provide high-quality, timely, and reliable computing services. CIT staff uses the electronic systems and computing resources to have privileged access to an ethical, professional, and legal manner strictly within their authorized job functions. Research, Scholarship, and Creative Expression* are the primary mechanisms for creating, disseminating, and preserving new knowledge, which is the cornerstone of the Academy. The mission of Research Development in the Office of the Provost at Bethune-Cookman University is to foster the integration of research and education in a way that engages faculty and students to address and seek solutions to the problems that plague our communities, both locally and globally, through the creation, dissemination, and preservation of new knowledge within their discipline. The Office of the Provost works closely with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research to support faculty engagement in research. The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) at the Great Bethune Cookman University is delighted to embark on the journey of faith, scholarship, and service for the faculty, staff, and students of this stellar University. Our office operates in a dynamic environment and serves as the coordination point for all university grant proposals, contracts, cooperative agreements, and research protocols. The OSP supports and assists the faculty and the staff in identifying, preparing, reviewing, interpretation, and submitting requests for Proposals RFPs. This office is honored to assist in pre and post-award management and ensure the University complies with federal and state regulations. Further, our office assists in the education, professional development, and outreach of the Bethune-Cookman University family and the Daytona Beach community. The mission of Institutional Effectiveness is to build capacity for a culture of evidence and continuous improvement. We support the University's mission, core values, and pursuit of academic and operational excellence through the collection, analysis, and reporting of data that informs the strategic planning process, promotes effective allocation of resources, engages faculty and staff in the continuous improvement of the Institution's programs and services, and provides accountability to stakeholders. On October 3, 1904, a very determined young black woman, Mary McLeod Bethune, opened the Daytona Literary and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls with $1.50, faith in God, and five little girls: Lena, Lucille, and Ruth Warren, Anna Geiger and Celest Jackson. Through Dr. Bethune's lifetime, the school underwent several stages of growth and development, and on May 24, 1919, the Daytona Educational and Industrial Institute was changed to Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute. In 1923 the school merged with Cookman Institute of Jacksonville, Florida (founded in 1872) and became co-ed while also gaining the prestigious United Methodist Church affiliation. Although Bethune's school and Cookman Institute merger began in 1923, it was not finalized until 1925 when both schools collaborated to become the Daytona-Cookman Collegiate Institute. In 1931, the College became accredited by the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools of the Southern States as a Junior College with class B status. On April 27, 1931, the school's name was officially changed to Bethune-Cookman College to reflect the leadership of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. View full university
