The University of Bayreuth has six faculties, whose disciplinary and interdisciplinary concentrations are to thank for the university's national and international reputation – ideal conditions for those who want to teach and conduct research with the best and brightest. The University of Bayreuth may not offer the same range of courses as super-sized universities. But our size makes it easy for us to ensure the highest academic standards across our whole spectrum of courses. And we in Bayreuth agree: that is what counts. The main ingredient in our success: the strength of our disciplines. We understand that strong disciplines are the basis of cross-disciplinary teaching and research. For this reason, the University of Bayreuth has chosen to concentrate its efforts on six faculties, making sure that their research and teaching is nurtured and fostered across the board. We take pride in our accomplishments, and our faculties regularly make headlines in the academic world. In 2013, for example, three professors at the University of Bayreuth were awarded Advanced Grants by the European Research Council. These grants represent the highest honor conferred by the EU for outstanding scholarly achievement. These three scholars are based at the Chair for Physical Chemistry I of the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry & Geophysics (one of the University of Bayreuth's research centers), where they are conducting trail-blazing fundamental research towards the design of new materials. Our reputation for scholarly achievement has affected the university positively in every regard. With its impressive research facilities and institutes, the campus has long been an international magnet for science and teaching. That is probably why the University of Bayreuth has celebrated many awards and honors for its scholarly accomplishments. At our faculty, students and junior scholars have the chance to work in a highly creative research environment. Research prizes such as a European Advanced Grant, a Leibniz Prize, a Lichtenberg professorship, and a Humboldt Research Award bear witness to our cutting-edge research strength. Our faculty's reputation continues to attract outstanding scholars from around the globe. They are drawn to the excellent research environment and proactive teaching on campus. This is also what students appreciate most, as is borne out by the evaluations conducted regularly. The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics & Computer Science has well-equipped laboratories, lecture halls, and CIP pools, in addition to an HPC cluster with 97.6 teraflops (that is a lot). The faculty's well-stocked library provides free access to a wide variety of e-books. Students also benefit from research-based internships and access to high-performance mathematical software. They can even write their bachelor's or master's theses while working as part of an international research team in a field such as robotics, computer graphics, algebraic geometry, dynamics and optimization, biological physics, or innovative materials and energy. The faculty's institutes are active in interdisciplinary research associations and research training groups covering polymer and colloid science, molecular biosciences, high-pressure and high-temperature research, and nonlinear dynamics and complex systems. Languages are keys to unlock other cultures – this is a guiding principle at the University of Bayreuth's Faculty of Languages & Literature. And the convenience of a compact campus, small teaching groups, and direct contact with teaching staff all come together to provide programs that are both intensive and well-supported. Our faculty offers a range of study programs relating to foreign cultures, such as Romance Studies, African Studies, Anglophone Cultural Studies, and other disciplines, including German Studies, Theatre & Media, and Music. Humanities programs at the University of Bayreuth are particularly attractive thanks to the heavy focus on intercultural processes and a primarily comparative cultural studies approach. We specialize in research and teaching on the relationships between European and non-European languages, cultures, and literature while maintaining our work's applied, practical nature. Our faculty's departments work thoroughly in the spirit of Wilhelm von Humboldt's ideas on combined teaching and research. Their projects are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) through the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies.
