  1. Being the Theological Seminary of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Bavaria and one of the two Theological Seminaries in Germany, the Augustana offers a fascinating variety of opportunities and programs in Christian education, academic theology, religious studies, and practical experiences in church and society, at different levels and degrees. Therefore, students from all over Germany and many different international partner schools and universities come here to start or continue their studies in protestant theology. Our international network brings into contact institutions worldwide, e.g., Divinity Schools and University Faculties of Theology within Europe (Basel, Budapest, Montpellier, Rome, Oslo, Vienna, Zurich) as well as in Africa, America, Asia, and Australia. Our campus's inspiring diversity and openness - among the students and the staff and the colleagues - leads to an intensive dialogue among people from different parts of this one world, from different churches, confessions, and denominations, from different religious origins, vocational backgrounds, and theological orientations. In this sense, our being Lutheran means: being ecumenically Lutheran, in continuing exchange and reciprocal enrichment. It is not a case that in the last years many of our international guests came from the catholic and the orthodox church. The Augustana has close ties with the church's social and welfare work and with its missionary work. Nearby, right here in Neuendettelsau, you can find the vital institution of the Diakonie Neuendettelsau with its numerous diachronic activities and the Centrum Mission EineWelt, the Bavarian Church's Centre of Mission, with its worldwide international, intercultural, and interreligious activities. Students and researchers staying at the Augustana are kindly invited to benefit from these collaborations through their projects, internships, traineeships, etc. In 1990, our Theological Seminary conferred the right to award doctoral degrees, and shortly, a master's program will be established. Therefore, international guests come to the Augustana for the undergraduate program and as PhD-candidates for the dissertation or as researchers/professors for Post-Doc and individual research projects. But if you, being, e.g., a pastor or a school teacher, prefer to come here only for a short stay - in order to get in contact with German theology, to improve your language skills in German or to work on a particular research project - we would appreciate your application anyway! We can generally supply all of our international guest's rooms/apartments on campus, mensa, 24h/day access to our library/all essential facilities, and free internet. Besides, our International Office is ready to assist you with all academic and personal questions from the beginning of an individual project. Because of our close contacts with important organizations like the Lutheran World Foundation or the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), we offer assistance in applying for individual study/research projects, too. Please get in contact with us in time! International guests should be aware that all lectures, seminars, and the Latin, Greek, and Hebrew language courses are held in German at the Augustana (as it is at nearly all German Divinity Schools/Faculties of Protestant Theology). Therefore, if you want to come here and regularly register as an undergraduate or graduate student, you will have to bring a German language certificate. However, doctoral dissertations and translations in language examinations can be written in English. The Augustana is located in a beautifully landscaped park and offers close communication opportunities between students and staff. Neuendettelsau is only 25 miles from Nuremberg (= Nürnberg). The city can easily be reached by train or car.
  2. We promise at Augustana that you will find an intellectually challenging environment. But this is also a place where academic rigor is accompanied by generous levels of support from faculty and staff committed to your success. We promise we will integrate faith in the learning environment. This is a place where it is okay to talk about God and ask questions about faith and where students will understand their faith and the values in which they believe. We promise we will engage in the community. This is a place where people seek to get to know one another and where relationships are built that are valid and personal. When our students, in turn, promise to challenge themselves intellectually, integrate faith discussions, and engage in our community, the result is a covenant relationship that creates an educational experience of enduring value. In the Office of Admission, we count ourselves lucky. Each day, we have the privilege of working with students who are imagining the possibilities. They dream of the life they will create and how they might serve the world tomorrow, given the opportunity to explore and discover important ideas today. We invite you to learn more about admission and scholarships, why Augustana is a significant investment, and what it means to Be a Viking. Thank you for considering Augustana – we're looking forward to getting to know you. Students who enroll at Augustana are attracted by our intellectually challenging yet supportive learning environment, faith integration, and the active and engaged campus community. These Augustana experience elements add up to an education of enduring worth, preparing you for a lifetime of learning and service. Choosing a college is possibly the most critical decision of your life thus far. We invite you to begin learning about the Augustana community through university-produced videos and viewing photo galleries of student life. Some call it the Liberal Arts. Others call it teaching for twenty-first-century skills. At Augustana, we specialize in providing an education designed for the innovators and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. Learning from a faculty of renowned professors, here you will build a foundation of knowledge, discover your passions, explore your vocation, develop specialties, and realize the significance and meaning of serving others. You will have the option to pursue multiple majors and minors while building experience through choice hands-on learning opportunities. And on Commencement Day, you will graduate with a vast professional network, an entrepreneurial mindset, and a passport to possibility. Founded in 1860, Augustana is a selective, comprehensive university affiliated with the Lutheran Church. With more than 100 majors, minors, and pre-professional programs for undergraduates, along with graduate degree and continuing education programs, the University is committed to enriching lives and fostering development by combining a liberal arts foundation with professional skill and advanced study. Augustana serves more than 2,000 students from 33 states and 32 countries. Most are part of our residential community and call our 100-acre campus home. Our graduate and continuing education programs serve students online and during times that are convenient for adult learners. Augustana offers more than 100 majors, minors, and pre-professional specializations within a 4-1-4 academic calendar. Extensive internship, study abroad, undergraduate research, and Civitas, the University's Honors Program supplement the curriculum. Our academic programs promote sensitivity to and appreciation of values essential for students to become useful citizens in local, national, and international communities. Questions of faith and values blend comfortably into all aspects of life at Augustana. Because the Lutheran tradition values every student's gift for learning, academic integrity is never compromised by slanting education to agree with a particular religious bias. All faith traditions are welcome here. By encouraging students to make career decisions consistent with their faith and values, Augustana educates students for a wide range of careers and professional callings. Inspired by Lutheran scholarly tradition and the liberal arts, Augustana provides an education of enduring worth that challenges the intellect, fosters integrity, and integrates faith with learning and service in a diverse world. Central to the Augustana experience are five core values. The community lives them and honors them, and they infuse the academic curriculum and student life. These five values are identified below, followed by a phrase that sums up the word's essence as it informs the University's mission. These phrases are, in turn, followed by how the value is expressed in the daily life of the University and its people. Long before "the green" was green ahead of the "the quad's" signature north-campus crisscross and decades before Ole, Viking Days, Vespers, and even the Huddle's early-morning coffee, Augustana University got its start in Hillsboro, Illinois — 650 miles east of Sioux Falls — as a place called Hillsboro Academy in 1835. At the urging of Lutheran Scandinavian leaders, Hillsboro Academy has renamed The Literary and Theological Institute of The Lutheran Church of the Far West in 1846. A short time later, the school moved north to Springfield, Illinois, where it was renamed again to Illinois State University. According to school records, many of the nation's early influencers attended ISU, including former Secretary of State John Hay and Robert Todd Lincoln, the son of Abraham Lincoln. 3. Augustana is a selective, private liberal arts and sciences college founded in 1860 by Swedish settlers. The 115-acre wooded campus is in Rock Island, Illinois, on the Mississippi River. It's part of the Quad-Cities (population 400,000) and about 165 miles west of Chicago. Augustana is a residential campus. First-year and sophomore students live in residence halls, juniors may choose transitional living areas (apartment-style housing on campus) seniors live on campus or in the neighborhood. Student activities include music groups, theatre, debate, publications, broadcasting, student government, the local Greek system, and a wide variety of professional, religious, departmental, political, social, and service organizations. Augustana College, rooted in the liberal arts and sciences and a Lutheran expression of the Christian faith, is committed to offering a challenging education that develops qualities of mind, spirit, and body necessary for a rewarding life of leadership and service in a diverse and changing world. The words of Augustana's mission statement reflect both tradition and vision. Founded by Swedish Lutheran settlers in Chicago in 1860, Augustana has grown from a small school educating Swedish immigrants into a selective college of the liberal arts and sciences. The college honors its roots and its affiliation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. At the same time, Augustana's rich liberal arts environment is enhanced by diversity. Augustana continues to do what it has always done — challenge and prepare students for leadership and service lives in a complex, ever-changing world. The Learning Commons is the place for all academic support needs. Whether you need help editing your research paper, searching for a Spanish tutor, improving your study skills, or developing English language skills, we're here to help. The Learning Commons includes the Reading/Writing Center and the Office of Student Success Services. It is on the fourth floor of the Gerber Center. Merit-based scholarships and awards are a form of gift aid, awarded without regard for financial need, and do not need to be repaid. Augustana offers merit-based scholarships and awards based on demonstrated academic achievement, talent, a program of interest, and other criteria. Students are automatically considered for many of the awards listed below based on their application for admission. Other awards require auditions or an additional application process. Students are automatically considered for academic merit scholarships based on their application for admission. Students may receive one of the following awards based on their credentials. Notification of any award is included in a student's acceptance letter. Scholarship amounts are based on the year in which a student first enrolls at Augustana. Most students, including transfer students, live on campus for their first three years. As seniors, they're prepared to move into off-campus housing. Augustana offers various residences, from historic House on the Hill to the modern layout of Swanson Commons. Augustana College is committed to providing an inclusive environment for all students. Students with documented disabilities should contact Yen Dao, director of Student Success Services, to determine the most appropriate accommodations. We provide reasonable accommodations by the American with Disabilities Act. Many studio art majors prepare for graduate work in a specific art genre or a career in art administration or education, art therapy, medical illustration, or museum work. Some students double-major or minor in art history, psychology, biology, education, or business. Art-related internships are available to integrate these areas, and faculty advisors work with students to help them apply their talents to future goals. Graphic design majors and minors have launched their careers in museum marketing and design for news and industry. Art education students are employed in public and private schools. Besides choosing theatre as a vocation, studying in theatre arts — combined with a solid liberal arts foundation — promotes skills that apply to many professions, including public relations, arts administration, broadcast journalism, marketing, advertising, law, government, communications, and arts education. Augustana graduates have completed Ph.D. and M.F.A. programs in theatre history, acting, directing, set design, theatre technology, costume design, and lighting design. Recent Augustana theatre alumni have built successful careers as talent agents, regional theatre performers, television and film actors, independent film producers, lighting designers, sound technicians, directors, stage managers, and teachers at the secondary and college levels. Augustana theatre students have more opportunities to be involved than at many undergraduate schools: besides actors, designers, and technicians, students may be stage managers, directors, and playwrights who collaborate on productions with faculty every season. Theatre arts majors also can be dramaturgs, conducting the historical and contextual research for mainstage productions. Music students prepare for their careers through carefully planned coursework in a strong liberal arts curriculum, individual advising, career internships, public performances, and other professional experience. Music education students gain teaching and conducting experience in their coursework and area schools with cooperating teachers. Many students teach at the S.B.C. Music and Arts Academy, a local program offering reduced-price lessons to promising students. Recent music graduates have entered graduate programs at the Boston Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Indiana University, Cincinnati Conservatory, Northwestern, and Michigan and Southern California universities.
